Another wildly productive week filled with work that nourished me and food that intrigued me.

And a cryofacial.

Pre-pandemic, on just about every Friday, I would take the afternoon off and head to the Lower East Side of Manhattan to this cool, new-age spa called the Kollectiv NYC.

They offer all sorts of out-there services like an infrared sauna, ajna light therapy and IV vitamin drips.

On those pre-pandemic Fridays that seem like they were a part of someone else’s life now, I used to love getting infusions of antioxidants like vitamin C and glutathione. I felt invigorated for days and somehow my skin seemed to glow brighter.

In addition to conventional facials, the Kollectiv offers cryofacials — treatments that dramatically cool down the skin in something reminiscent of jumping into a frozen lake in the middle of Iceland. Not that I’ve jumped into a frozen lake in Iceland (or anywhere!) — but I have been to Iceland and I can imagine the pure exhilaration! I’ve read that it has unique health benefits, too.

tempImagewMraoI.gif

According to the Kollectiv, cryofacials are modeled on an ancient practices.

The ancient wisdom of cold therapy has been used for centuries. Exposing the body to extreme cold for short periods of time increases circulation to reduce inflammation and pain. It boosts the immune system, helping you heal faster while tightening your skin and toning your muscles.

Facials are particularly geared towards boosting collagen, reducing fine lines and under-eye circles, promoting eyelash growth, and creating a healthy glow. Local or full-body treatments are most effective on sore or injured muscles and joints.

tempImagepBuKvm.gif

It sure was cold!

The treatment last about 20 minutes; that’s 20 minutes of constant cold, damp steam on your skin. It’s actually not as uncomfortable as you’d expect. I guess your face just becomes numb to it and you don’t feel it after a bit.

I really love getting them and think I’ll make trips back to the Kollectiv a part of my regular Friday afternoon me-time routines. It feels like I’m reaching back in time and rediscovering myself.

The week’s adventures included more than spa time. I hung out with friends in the Bronx again a couple of times and discovered this dope Middle Eastern restaurant that offers what I can only describe as a mix of traditional eastern Mediterranean cuisine and Indian vegan dishes. I had chicken shawarma and turmeric fries.

The week was full of lots of cool things and there’s much more to come…

The skincare stuff starts here.

Speaking of cool. As the winter weather recedes and warm spring air takes its place, my mood naturally shifts to lighter skin care. Like water-based Vitamin C serums; light, frothy cleansers; and delicious, light-whipped moisturizers with gel-like textures.

Last summer, I kicked off my second annual two-part series on lightweight face creams titled, Summer Moisturizers Part I – Some of the Best Lightweight Face Creams for Oily Skin and All Skin Types in Hot Weather. You can still catch the series here.

IMG_8100.jpg

SUMMER MOISTURIZERS PART I – SOME OF THE BEST LIGHTWEIGHT FACE CREAMS FOR OILY SKIN AND ALL SKIN TYPES IN HOT WEATHER

That piece featured some of my favorite face creams for warmer weather, including First Aid Beauty’s Ultra Repair Oil-Control Moisturizer and the SELF/ish Oil-Free Moisturizer. I’ve explored a whole slew of really great skincare products from each brand over the course of the past year.

So, with temps in NYC already brushing up against 70 degrees, I thought it would be cool (no pun intended!) to start the lightweight moisturizer series earlier in the year — in the middle of spring, just as things are warming up.

tempImage3Q4kuC.png

As in years past, I’ve split my deep dive into some of my warm weather skincare faves into two separate blog articles. Here in part one, I’m featuring three light-as-air face creams from Paula’s Choice, The Inkey List and Sobel Skin Rx.

Yes, I said “light-as-air.” I always crack up when a moisturizer is described as “light as air.” What could be any more ridiculous than that?!

Plus, once again, I’m featuring one of my favorite eye creams (IMO one of the best anti-aging eye creams!) — the SELF/ish Eye Cream. It’s super light, packed with antioxidants, peptides and all kinds of goodness for the eye area. And it’s crazy affordable, too!

Let’s take a look at the first super light face creams (and a super cool eye cream!) that have caught my eye this spring. And yes, they’re among the best moisturizers for oily skin and all skin types in warmer weather.

Paula’s Choice | Water-Infusing Electrolyte Moisturizer

I’ve had this intriguing, ultra lightweight moisturizer from Paula’s Choice in my product stash for probably six months now. I could never really figure out what to do with it. The Paula’s Choice Water-Infusing Electrolyte Moisturizer seems like one part intrigue, one part gimmick.

There was a wave of electrolyte-infused skincare products last year and I guess I was waiting to see if said wave actually became anything of significance. Some trends catch on, some trends peter out.

Among the first of the breakout electrolyte products to hit the market was the Drunk Elephant F-Balm Electrolyte Waterfacial — a cool sleeping mask I featured in my winter empties a few weeks ago, which you can read here.

IMG_6055.jpg

MY WINTER EMPTIES 2020: SERUMS, CLEANSERS AND TONERS FROM DRUNK ELEPHANT, PAULA'S CHOICE AND MORE!

The F-Balm Electrolyte Waterfacial is infused with what the brand refers to as 4-Electrolyte complex, essentially a blend of healthy minerals, antioxidants and humectants — coconut water, sodium PCA, magnesium PCA and prickly pear extract. It’s got a great texture and is quite a fun mask, I have to admit.

Around the time of Drunk’s electrolyte entry, Paula’s Choice introduced their Water-Infusing Electrolyte Moisturizer.

IMG_6108.jpg

Again, I wasn’t sure what to do with it. It’s just so light and, as it turns out, perfect for spring and summer. For me, it just wasn’t the right time of year for it. I was looking for richer textures to keep my skin from drying out in the cold.

Similar to the Drunk Elephant’s F-Balm Electrolyte Waterfacial, the Water-Infusing Electrolyte Moisturizer contains a complex of electrolyte minerals — including calcium, magnesium and potassium.

Interestingly, Paula’s INCI is a mile long! Normally that would give me pause, but this is Paula and I trust everything she’s got in there is gentle, serves the purpose of promoting skin health — or prolongs formula stability.

Notably, there are numerous lightweight humectants and hydrators in the top ten that help skin to maintain its water content.

In addition to the three electrolyte minerals in the formula, Water-Infusing Electrolyte Moisturizer features high concentrations of Glycerin, Butylene Glycol and Propanediol — none of them sexy skincare superstars, but all effective at what they do: hydrate.

IMG_9253.jpg

What Are Electrolytes and What Do Electrolytes Do for the Skin?

What are electrolytes anyway? Well, electrolytes are a class of water-binding minerals, including calcium, chloride, magnesium, phosphate, potassium, and sodium. Electrolytes in the body help to keep the skin healthy and hydrated.

As skin loses hydration when we sweat through our pores, it loses electrolytes along with that water content. In fact, these intriguing substances may be familiar to you if you drink sports drinks like Gatorade. Sports drinks are rich in electrolytes, helping to replenish vital minerals in the bodies of athletes or sports enthusiasts who sweat a whole lot more than the rest of us.

There’s an excellent article on the benefits of electrolytes for the skin on the Healthline website titled, Brainy Beauty: Can Electrolytes Really Hydrate Your Skin? I found this most interesting:

According to Dr. Bruce Robinson, FAAD, a board certified dermatologist in New York City and clinical professor of dermatology at Lenox Hill Hospital, water also plumps skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

“In the skin, electrolytes help conduct electricity when mixed with water, enabling cells to regulate pH levels and keep the body’s hydration system in check,” says Robinson. “They can help your skin to retain water… and [could] eventually help your skin get better at holding onto hydration.”

The question is whether electrolytes applied to the skin actually sink in well enough to boost hydration.

While Robinson hasn’t seen any high-quality studies showing if electrolyte skin care works, “On paper, it makes sense,” he says.

Although he won’t recommend electrolyte creams to his patients until studies prove that they’re better than the (often significantly less expensive) moisturizers already on the market, they could be worth the splurge if they really do live up to the hype.

Electrolyte creams are ideal if you work out a lot, have dry, irritated, or sensitive skin, or if you have certain types of eczema, says Robinson.

IMG_9254.jpg

Again, the INCI of the Water-Infusing Electrolyte Moisturizer formula is extensive. There are so many antioxidant botanical extracts I didn’t even bother to count them. There must be a dozen! Many of them are the kinds of fruit extracts you often see in an ingredient list — like Apple Fruit Extract, Kiwi Fruit Extract and Wild Cherry Fruit Extract.

But Mangosteen Peel Extract?

Now that’s just plain weird. I don’t know who made Water-Infusing Electrolyte Moisturizer, but I’d like to try whatever they’re smoking!

tempImageJzjI8V.gif

All joking aside, it’s actually quite an impressive nutrient-replenishing moisturizer that makes an ideal face cream for oily skin.

Paula’s Choice describes the efficacy of this rather unusual lotion this way: “The electrolytes in this quenching formula work with natural hydrators to draw the right amount of moisture into skin and hold it there. A blend of natural antioxidants, ceramides, B vitamins and prebiotic sugars work throughout skin’s uppermost layers, optimizing its ability to stay moisturized over time.”

Seriously, if you have oily skin, or simply want a lightweight product that maintains your skin’s hydration levels on a hot day, the Paula’s Choice Water-Infusing Electrolyte Moisturizer is an excellent option.

Skin will drink it right up! No Gatorade necessary.

The Inkey List | Symbright Moisturizer

I love Inkey innovations! From their very first collection, which included one of my favorite moisturizers of all time, the Turmeric Brightening Moisturizer, Inkey has been pushing the skincare envelope. The brand has recently introduced their new Fulvic Acid Cleanser — and I can’t get enough of it.

Inkey’s intriguing Fulvic Acid Cleanser sounds super weird and nerdy, but that’s what I love about Inkey. (I happen to be touch weird and nerdy myself!) The light gel cleanser is infused with Nordic Peat, rich in fulvic acid. There’s also power brightening Kakadu Plum Extract, a natural source of Vitamin C, and Licorice Root Extract — a natural brightener popular in K-Beauty.

IMG_5303.jpg

It’s likely no coincidence that Inkey introduced two brightening products at the same time. The brightening skincare category is pretty hot right now. More expected brightening actives like Vitamin C and Niacinamide of course lead the pack, but a whole new generation of power brighteners have come on the scene, among them Tranexamic Acid.

In fact, Inkey has led with innovation there, too, with the introduction last year of their Tranexamic Acid Hyperpigmentation Treatment — which I reviewed on the blog here.

So right on cue, along with the Fulvic Acid Cleanser, The Inkey List introduced Symbright Moisturizer — a brightening face cream powered by a 0.5% concentration of a new, patented brightening complex called Symbright.

It took some work to figure out where exactly in the INCI Symbright appears. In fact, the product’s INCI is just 20 ingredients deep so it was funny that it took some effort. There are a few ingredients that are new to me, but I did finally determine that an active listed as Sclareolide is, in fact, Symbright. A bit more googling and I found that it’s produced through the fermentation of the clary sage — a relatively common botanical that’s relatively uncommon in skincare.

IMG_9257.jpg

The experts on the Paula’s Choice Research Team who are responsible for Paula’s extensive ingredient glossary are not exactly fans of the extract. They describe it as “an ingredient that's fermented from clary sage and used as a fragrant component in cosmetics. As such, it has the potential to be a skin sensitizer.”

Nary a mention of its brightening properties.

IMG_9256.jpg

Symbright isn’t the only brightening active in the formula. There’s also a 2% concentration of potent antioxidant Kakadu Plum Extract, a rich, natural source of Vitamin C.

The Symbright Moisturizer is a relatively simple formula — a hallmark of Inkey’s products.

There’s also a red algae complex that nourishes skin and delivers a humectant benefit to keep skin hydrated. I love to see algae anything in a product.

It’s not only wonderfully replenishing and hydrating, but common seaweed extract also has humectant and antioxidant properties.

With a light, silky texture, Symbright Moisturizer is superbly comfortable on the skin and not the least bit greasy. In fact, it has a nice dry-down effect that makes it really easy to layer — and ideal for a hot, humid day.

Sobel Skin Rx | Bio Hyaluronic Moisture Cream Extreme

I’m a day one fan of Sobel Skin Rx. As I recall, the clinical skincare brand launched last January, right at the beginning of the pandemic. Or was it the January before? It’s all a big crazy blur.

I did a deep-dive into the brand last summer titled, Dermatologist Skincare Brand Sobel Skin Rx - Some of the Best Anti-Aging Face Products for Healthy, Youthful Skin. (You can still catch the full piece here.)

I believe there are eight or so products in Dr. Sobel’s line-up, and I’ve tried just about all of them. To this day, the Sobel Skin Rx 15% Niacinamide Gel Serum is my fave product from his clinical range.

IMG_7369.jpg

PRODUCT REVIEW: SOBEL SKIN RX 15% NIACINAMIDE GEL SERUM - ONE OF THE BEST NIACINAMIDE SERUMS FOR BRIGHT SKIN

If you’re looking for a great, clinical strength retinoid to address signs of aging, I highly recommend the Sobel Skin Rx 4.5% Retinol Night Treatment. The super potent treatment was featured in my recent blog article on Retinol products titled, Retinol, Retinoids, Retinoic Acid Part Two: Best Retinol Serums, Best Retinol Creams from Drunk Elephant, Shani Darden, The Ordinary and More!

So, given that I’m generally impressed with the clinical strength efficacy and quality of the the Sobel Skin Rx formulas, I was excited to try out the brand’s new Bio Hyaluronic Moisture Cream Extreme.

tempImageJQ17lF.gif

It’s my favorite texture of the warm weather face creams in the entire series!

The Sobel Skin Rx Bio Hyaluronic Moisture Cream Extreme is infused with what the brand describes as “a rare, marine-based bio-polymer and a bio-derived form of hyaluronic acid.”

These actives are powered by Dr. Sobel’s patent-pending SD-100 concentrate. I know SD-100 sounds like some sort of weird alien technology, but it’s actually an innovative delivery system that enhances the penetration of the moisturizing, humectant and antioxidant actives deeper into the skin barrier. How much farther they go is a mystery to me, but it sounds cool.

What I love most about the formula is its excellent hydrating effect on the skin. I won’t say it’s light as water. It’s not really a gel-cream, which is a much lighter formulation. But Bio Hyaluronic Moisture Cream Extreme is as refreshing as water!

It really does a great job at locking in moisture and preventing dehydration — something termed trans-epidermal water loss, to TEWL. I assume that’s attributable to Dr. Sobel’s “Bio Hyaluronic Acid” — listed on the INCI as common Sodium Hyaluronate and at a concentration I’m assuming to be about 2%, which is at the high end.

IMG_9260.jpg

What Is Hyaluronic Acid and What Does Hyaluronic Acid Do for the Skin?

I love this article on Hyaluronic Acid on the Healthline website titled, Why Science Says Hyaluronic Acid Is the Holy Grail to Wrinkle-Free, Youthful Hydration. It’s wonky and full of insights. Check this part out:

“The benefits of hyaluronic acid on the skin has to do with its molecular weight and concentration. In this case, size matters! The molecular weight refers to its mass, or how big the HA molecule is. This is measured in something called unified atomic mass units — daltons, or kDa for short.

HA between 50 to 1,000 kDa is the most beneficial for skin, with about 130 kDa being the best, according to the most recent human studies. Anything higher won't make too much of a difference. Anything lower might cause inflammation. How did we get this number? When you look at studies, you'll see a pattern, but one of the most thorough studies looked at HA with different molecular weights, including 50, 130, 300, 800, and 2,000 kDa.

After one month, they found that treatment with 130 kDa HA was the most effective, increasing skin elasticity by 20 percent. Both the 50 and 130 kDa groups had significant improvement in wrinkle-depth and skin roughness after 60 days. All the other molecular weights still improved elasticity and skin hydration, just less so. You can read more about this molecular weight analysis from the original breakdown here.”

IMG_9261.jpg

Despite the fact that the Sobel Skin Rx Bio Hyaluronic Moisture Cream Extreme is infused with multiple non-fragrant plant oils, it’s not at all greasy. Sunflower Seed Oil is actually the second ingredient. Both Shea Butter, and Avocado Oil are also in the INCI’s top ten.

Bio Hyaluronic Moisture Cream Extreme is quite a well-rounded face cream. In addition to the moisturizing, replenish plant oils and the humectant Sodium Hyaluronate, there are numerous antioxidant botanical extracts, lipid-boosting ceramides, and Chondrus Crispus Extract — a superb red algae that’s rated among the best active ingredients in skin care by the experts on the Paula’s Choice Research Team.

Chondrus crispus, also known as red algae, is a type of seaweed that’s a rich source of many nutrients for skin, including the pigment beta-carotene and potent antioxidants zeaxanthin, lutein, which help protect skin from the visible effects of blue light exposure. Of course, the antioxidants in red algae have wider-reaching benefits, too.

The natural polysaccharides, peptides, and amino acids in red algae also help skin to stay hydrated; meanwhile, the numerous antioxidants in this and other types of algae can help shield skin from damaging airborne pollutants.

Chondrus crispus contains a compound known as carrageenan, which forms a flexible film on skin that offers further defense against environmental stressors.

When I see Chondrus crispus on an INCI, I purr inside like Orpheus.

The new Sobel Skin Rx Bio Hyaluronic Moisture Cream Extreme is an excellent option for all skin types in warmer weather, except super oily or acne-prone.

SELF/ish | Eye Cream

I had just completed my latest article on new eye creams titled, A Few New Eye Creams I’m Really into Now with Farmacy, First Aid Beauty and More! when I came across the SELF/ish Eye Cream for the very first time. It’s simply one of the best clean eye creams available — and I’ve now been through probably 4-5 tubes of it since. It was love at first, ahem, sight.

IMG_3119.jpg

I first reviewed the SELF/ish brand in an article titled, SELF/ish Skincare For Men - Best Clean Facial Moisturizer, Best Clean Eye Cream and More. You can catch the full piece here.

Like all SELF/ish products, the SELF/ish Eye Cream relies on clean science and a blend of antioxidant vitamins to promote optimal skin health.

The clean beauty trend is one of the best, most pro-skin health, that I’ve seen in my entire career. The drive to compel skincare manufacturers and marketers to create skin care that’s truly non-toxic and even healthy is unparalleled in the beauty industry. And a clean eye cream is kinda the holy grail for me. The eye area is just so delicate and being gentle as possible is always best.

What Is Clean Beauty and What Does Clean Skincare Mean?

I found a thoughtful article full of clean beauty insights on the Martha Stewart website titled, Everything You Need to Know About Clean Skincare, that I think really gets to the heart of it.

Right along with green and organic, clean is a word often used today in the sphere of wellness. “Clean eating” is used to describe a diet full of fresh, organic foods made without additives, preservatives, and chemicals. Likewise, clean beauty is used to describe cosmetics formulated without toxic ingredients.

But there’s not a universal definition of clean beauty since it’s not regulated by the government. “In the United States, there's a feeling that the government doesn't restrict enough ingredients in personal care products,” says Tara Foley, founder of clean beauty mecca Follain. “In Europe and Canada, the government better regulates what can and can’t be in beauty products.” In fact, the European Union has banned more than 1,300 ingredients for cosmetic use, while the United States has banned only 11, according to the CSC, or the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.

Instead, beauty brands are increasingly taking it upon themselves to restrict toxic ingredients linked to cancers and hormone disorders. “Each of us has to decide for ourselves what clean means, and customers have to decide what’s important to them,” Foley says. “I believe clean skincare prioritizes human and environmental health and restricts ingredients that are harmful to that. Clean skincare uses nutritious, plant-based ingredients as much as possible, and safe synthetics as necessary for preservation or performance.”

IMG_9900.jpg

The SELF/ish Eye Cream formula contains a high concentration of the skin-replenishing, non-fragrant plant oil Sunflower Seed Oil, the second ingredient.

There’s humectant Sodium Hyaluronate and several antioxidant botanical extracts, too, including Albizia Julibrissin Bark Extract, or Birch Bark Extract.

But the real anti-aging power at the heart of the formula is a blend of four peptides and the brand’s signature Vitamin Boost Complex, comprising vitamins B5, C, E and the Vitamin A alternative, Bakuchiol.

IMG_9259.jpg

The combination of plumping the peptides Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5, Dipeptide-2, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7, and Palmitoyl Hexapeptide-12 combine for a concentration of about 4% — a nice amount for the eye area.

And while I love all that, perhaps what I appreciate most about the SELF/ish Eye Cream is its perfect texture — not too thick, not too thin. It’s just right for warmer weather. And, it comes in a tube to preserve its anti-aging power over the life of the product.

IMG_5813.jpg

SELF/ish SKINCARE FOR MEN - BEST CLEAN FACIAL MOISTURIZER, BEST CLEAN EYE CREAM AND MORE

At just $22, it’s a phenomenal value for such a well-formulated, toxin-free eye treatment. It’s a far better anti-aging eye cream than La Mer’s $235 The Eye Concentrate Cream, which is loaded with all kinds of potential irritants, including fragrance. Fragrance in the eye area?! Ugh.

SHOP THE BLOG: Purchase the SELF/ish Eye Cream for just $22 here.

That’s it, guys! Thanks for humoring me as I take my deep dive into warmer weather skincare. Stay tuned for part two, coming soon…

Have a great week!
