BIRTHDAY GIVEAWAY COLLAB: SKINCARMA X THE GLOW MAKER – BEST ANTI-AGING SERUMS, BEST NIACINAMIDE SERUM, BEST RETINOL SERUM
tempImage3tS0V0.gif

My birthday is this Wednesday, July 28th. Not only does that make me a Leo, but I’m actually a triple Leo! My star sign is Leo, and both Mercury and the moon were in Leo at the time of my birth.

So, with a mid-week birthday, the celebrations naturally have to span from one weekend to the next. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I kicked off weekend number one with a return to the KAWS exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum. Yes, it was so dope I had to go back!

If you’re unfamiliar with KAWS the artist, you may be familiar with his work — super creative, colorful pieces that bridge art, pop culture and commercialism. Brian Donnelly, the Jersey-born, Brooklyn-based artist known as KAWS, is most famous for his iconic character pieces that feature X’s for eyes.

And the KAWS: WHAT PARTY? exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum features some of his most popular works — as well as a few pieces exclusive to the exhibit. (That’s something I wasn’t aware of on my initial visit!)

It was a lot to take in. Hitting the exhibit a second time opened my eyes to things I had not noticed last weekend. It was akin to re-reading a favorite book; re-watching a complex, meandering film; or catching an episode of HBO’s Game of Thrones. (For the record, I’ve never been able to get through a single episode of GOT!)

tempImagepIC5Rk.gif

If you’re like me, you often catch something new, realize something that you’d missed the first time around. Even see things in a different perspective, with the knowledge and experience you attained the first time.

Art can be as overwhelming as it is provocative. I try to be in the moment, feel the piece in front of me. What is it evoking in me? What does it remind me of? How stirring is it, if at all?

And of course, I had to kick off the birthday weekend with a return to my fave new-age spa, the Kollectiv NYC, for a subzero cryofacial. Nothing like freezing the wrinkles in place, even if it’s only a matter of hours before they take shape again.

(Psst…that’s not really what a cryofacial does; the purpose is to stimulate the skin to promote collagen production.)

I bookended birthday weekend part one with a return the Kollectiv on Sunday for my second energy healing session featuring VortexHealing, “a holistic system of multi-dimensional healing and inner awakening.”

So what’s next?

While I had plans to jump out of a plane skydiving on Wednesday (the actual date of my birth), the time just doesn’t seem right. Somehow I couldn’t get it organized. And while I located a place on Long Island that seems reputable, I couldn’t decide who I wanted to jump out of that plane with me. Aside from the instructor, someone has to risk everything, too, right? I have no need for spectators. I need cohorts! :)

Mark my words, I’m jumping out of a plane. Like getting that lion tattoo on my back, it’s just a matter of time.

So instead of skydiving, I plan to cap off the celebrations with my feet firmly on the ground exploring the immersive Van Gogh exhibit at Pier 36 on the East Side of Manhattan overlooking the East River and Downtown Brooklyn (and home!).

An introspective and immersive art exhibit? That’s gonna be an event to remember…

The skincare stuff starts here.

As I have for the past couple of years, I’m celebrating my birthday with a gift of some of my favorite skincare. This year, I’m collaborating with The Glow Maker — one of my favorite skincare brands that offers some of the best anti-aging serums I’ve come across.

I’ve reviewed many of The Glow Maker’s products and, quite likely, all of the brand’s vitamin-powered facial serums. I took a deep dive into The Glow Maker in a piece early last year titled, Brands I Love: The Glow Maker Antioxidant Serums And Anti-Aging Facial Skincare. You can catch it here, if you’re so inclined.

IMG_1931.jpg

BRANDS I LOVE: THE GLOW MAKER ANTIOXIDANT SERUMS AND ANTI-AGING FACIAL SKINCARE

If you’re unfamiliar with the brand, The Glow Maker offers a range of remarkably well-formulated clinical skin care. Many of their products are the kind of active-powered serums that I prefer in my routines. Serums are characteristically more highly concentrated and because they’re lightweight, tend to penetrate the skin more readily and, thus, deliver greater efficacy.

True to the Skincarma ABC philosophy, a pro-skin health skincare routine should be comprised of three vitamin-infused treatments in serum form — Vitamin A (either Retinol or Bakuchiol), Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) and Vitamin C.

The three antioxidant vitamins are among the most essential ingredients for maintaining optimum skin health. Add in a good cleanser, hydrating toner, humectant serum (e.g. Beta Glucan, Hyaluronic Acid) and oil-based moisturizer with a facial oil or cream (plus SPF in the AM) and you’ve got a winning skincare routine.

The Glow Maker was founded in sunny California on the premise that great skincare shouldn’t be restricted to the elite. The Glow Maker’s founders wanted to “alleviate the injustice of quality skincare products not being accessible to the average” person.

You know that fits perfectly with the Skincarma credo that great skin care should be available to everyone. I call it the democratization of skin care. Often with less expensive products, there are tradeoffs, of course — like carton-free packaging and cheap skin irritants. In truth, democratically priced products aren’t always well-formulated and are rarely clean.

Among my favorite clean, affordable skincare brands is Ghost Democracy, which I reviewed on the blog in an article titled, Brands I Love: Ghost Democracy Intriguingly Clean Skincare With A Twist, available to read here. The Ghost Democracy Invisible Lightweight Daily Face Sunscreen SPF 33 is a personal favorite and among the best mineral sunscreens for face that literally leaves no white cast (at least on me!) — which I find rather hilarious for a brand called “ghost”!

PRODUCT REVIEW: INVISIBLE LIGHTWEIGHT DAILY FACE SUNSCREEN SPF 33 - THE BEST MINERAL SUNSCREEN FOR FACE

Not only are The Glow Maker’s products well-formulated and clean, they’re also natural and cruelty-free — with a significant amount of organic actives in each.

And of course, they’re affordably priced, too, with anti-aging and antioxidant vitamin serums ranging from $25-$45. At the low end is the The Glow Maker’s 20% Vitamin C Facial Serum — at $25 one of the most well-formulated and affordable Vitamin C serums. And at $45, The Glow Maker Niacinamide Booster Serum is the brand’s most expensive product, a personal favorite and one of the best Niacinamide serums I’ve encountered. (Both are reviewed below.)

Let’s have a look at my faves from the brand — and be sure to enter the SKINCARMA X THE GLOW MAKER BIRTHDAY GIVEAWAY for a chance to try four of The Glow Maker’s best serums for yourself (including that Niacinamide serum!)…

The Glow Maker | Niacinamide Booster Serum

Of all The Glow Maker products I’ve tried in the last two years or so, the brand’s Niacinamide Booster Serum is my fave from the brand. The Glow Maker’s formula has a 10% concentration of the multi-benefit active — up there with the 10% Niacinamide Booster from Paula’s Choice. That one’s the OG, hands down. I go through a bottle of it every three weeks!

Like the Paula’s Choice 10% Niacinamide Booster, The Glow Maker serum is more than just a Niacinamide treatment. The brand’s Niacinamide Booster Serum is a powerhouse, pro-skin health blend of antioxidant botanicals, humectants, amino acids, minerals and vitamins — including Vitamins C, E, B5 and of course, Niacinamide, or Vitamin B3.

PRODUCT REVIEW: PAULA’S CHOICE 10% NIACINAMIDE BOOSTER – THE BEST NIACINAMIDE SERUM

It’s got so much more going for it that it’s kind of odd to define it strictly as a Niacinamide treatment. Sometimes, product marketing has a way with reality. (Make that all the time!) Like some of the best anti-aging serums available, including the Clinique Fresh Pressed Daily Booster with Pure Vitamin C, I think defining it so narrowly sells the product short. Most people aren’t going to turn it around and closely examine what’s in it. If it says it’s a Niacinamide serum, that’s what it is.

So I’m here to tell you, as a Niacinamide serum, The Glow Maker got it right — and some!

Every time I talk about Niacinamide, I feel the duty to impress upon Skincarma readers the indispensable qualities of Niacinamide and the remarkable benefits that Vitamin B3 can have for the skin. It’s the most versatile, pro-skin health ingredient used in skincare.

As a powerful antioxidant, Niacinamide helps skin defend against environmental damage. It also brightens the complexion — just as potent forms of Vitamin C can do. Over time, Niacinamide helps to strengthen and thicken the skin barrier to prevent against dehydration. And, at higher concentrations, it can even retexturize the surface of the skin, leaving it smoother and softer.

IMG_7402.jpg

What is Niacinamide and What Does Niacinamide Do for the Skin?

I found a comprehensive article on the form of Vitamin B3 written by the skin experts on the Paula’s Choice Research Team, titled simply, How Niacinamide Helps Skin. It doesn’t do it justice! They should have titled the article, Niacinamide is the Game Changer You Need to Defend Against Skin Damage and Maintain Optimal Skin Health.

Excerpts from the Paula’s Choice piece….

How Niacinamide Helps Skin

Niacinamide is a skin care ingredient worthy of your attention and your skin will love you for using it. Among a handful of other amazing skin care ingredients such as retinol and vitamin C, niacinamide is a standout because of its versatility for almost any skin care concern and skin type.

As many of you know about us, but for those who don’t, the conclusions we make about any ingredient are always based on what the published research has shown to be true—and the research about niacinamide unanimously demonstrates how special it is. New research keeps showing it’s one of the most exciting skin care ingredients around.

What is Niacinamide?

Also known as vitamin B3 and nicotinamide, niacinamide is a water-soluble vitamin that works with the natural substances in your skin to help visibly minimize enlarged pores, tighten lax pores, improve uneven skin tone, soften fine lines and wrinkles, diminish dullness, and strengthen a weakened surface.

Niacinamide also reduces the impact of environmental damage because of its ability to improve skin’s barrier (its first line of defense), plus it also plays a role in helping skin to repair signs of past damage. Left unchecked, this type of daily assault makes skin appear older, dull, and less radiant.

Why You Should Use Niacinamide

As you might have gathered, we’re very impressed with all that niacinamide can do for skin when applied via skin care products like toners, serums, and highly concentrated leave-on treatments. Niacinamide is uniquely compatible with any of the products in your skin care routine, including those that contain retinol, peptides, hyaluronic acid, AHAs, BHA, vitamin C, and all types of antioxidants.

You can use multiple niacinamide-containing products in your routine, and it will still be non-sensitizing as this ingenious B vitamin is well tolerated by all skin types. It’s even suitable for use by those with sensitive or rosacea-prone skin.

Other helpful benefits of niacinamide are that it helps renew and restore the surface of skin against moisture loss and dehydration by helping skin improve its natural production of skin-strengthening ceramides. When ceramides become depleted over time, skin is left vulnerable to all sorts of problems, from persistent patches of dry, flaky skin to increasingly becoming extra-sensitive.

If you struggle with dry skin, topical application of niacinamide has been shown to boost the hydrating ability of moisturizers so skin’s surface can better resist the moisture loss that leads to recurrent dry, tight, flaky skin. Niacinamide works brilliantly with common moisturizer ingredients like glycerin, non-fragrant plant oils, cholesterol, sodium PCA, and sodium hyaluronate.

How does niacinamide help pores? Great question, although the answer here isn’t certain. Simply put, research hasn’t come to a full understanding about how this B vitamin works its pore-reducing magic, but it does! It seems that niacinamide has a normalizing ability on the pore lining, and that this influence plays a role in keeping debris from getting backed up, which leads to clogs and rough, bumpy skin. As the clog forms and worsens, the pores stretch to compensate, and what you’ll see is enlarged pores. By helping things get back to normal, niacinamide use helps pores return to their normal size. Sun damage can cause pores to become stretched, too, leading to what some describe as "orange peel skin". Higher concentrations of niacinamide can help visibly tighten pores by shoring up skin’s supportive elements.

The Glow Maker’s Niacinamide Booster Serum is made of 53% organic ingredients and has a slightly thicker texture than the Paula’s Choice 10% Niacinamide Booster — with a milky, creamy consistency. It’s not so thick, though, that it isn’t easily layered; it melts right into skin.

Because it’s so packed with pro-skin health goodness, it’s the most expensive of The Glow Maker products at $45 for one ounce.

The Glow Maker | 20% Vitamin C Facial Serum (Antioxidant Serum)

IMO, no skincare brand is legitimate without a Vitamin C serum. And when it’s a well-formulated Vitamin C serum, it can put the brand on the proverbial map. The Glow Maker’s 20% Vitamin C Facial Serum is top shelf. (It is newly marketed as an Antioxidant Serum.)

The fact that the 20% Vitamin C Facial Serum is such a well-formulated Vitamin C treatment for just $25 puts it at the top of my list of recommendations — right up there with The Ordinary’s Ethylated Ascorbic Acid 15% Solution, the Garden of Wisdom Vitamin C 23% Serum & Ferulic Acid and, of course, the Clinique Fresh Pressed Daily Booster with Pure Vitamin C 10%one of the best anti-aging serums of all time.

IMG_4304.jpg

PRODUCT REVIEW: CLINIQUE FRESH PRESSED DAILY BOOSTER WITH PURE VITAMIN C 10% – BEST ANTI-AGING SERUM

Psst…if you’re interested in exploring what I consider to be the best Vitamin C serums for face, have a look at my collection of Vitamin C product reviews here.

Similar to The Glow Maker Niacinamide Booster Serum, the brand’s 63% organic 20% Vitamin C Facial Serum is a veritable treasure trove of beneficial actives beyond just power-brightening Vitamin C — including humectant Sodium Hyaluronate, moisturizing Vitamin E and numerous antioxidant botanicals.

IMG_7403.jpg

I always know a brand’s chemists know what they’re doing when they pair Vitamin C with Ferulic Acid. Not only is Ferulic Acid a terrific antioxidant in its own right, but it’s considered Vitamin C’s BFF — it keeps that crazy, unstable element grounded.

Like a bestie would!

There are, of course, multiple forms of Vitamin C — with varying efficacy. The particular form of Vitamin C in The Glow Maker formula, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, is an intriguing choice. (In a good way!)

Not only is Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate a stable, water-soluble form of Vitamin C with all the antioxidant and skin-brightening goodness of the element, but research has shown that concentrations of 5% or more can help mitigate the occurrence of acne blemishes on the skin.

The Best Vitamin C Serums

What Does Vitamin C Do for Skin?

There’s an excellent article on the remarkable benefits of Vitamin C for the skin from the experts on the Paula’s Choice Research Team titled, What is Vitamin C and How Does it Benefit Skin?

Vitamin C is one of the most exciting, research-proven ingredients you can apply to skin. This water-soluble antioxidant is a natural component of healthy skin. When we’re young, vitamin C levels in skin’s outermost two layers (epidermis and dermis) are abundant, but as we age, these levels naturally deplete. Unprotected sun exposure (UV damage) and pollution can accelerate this decline, leading to skin looking and feeling dull, uneven, and less firm than it once was.

Luckily, there are topical skin care solutions that can help mitigate this damage, so skin looks and feels healthier and younger longer.

Vitamin C Benefits for Skin

Vitamin C’s benefits for skin are vast, including its ability to even out skin tone and diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. While this powerhouse ingredient is well-known for its skin-brightening benefits, research also shows it can shield skin from the visible impacts of environmental stressors, including free radical damage. This synergy of mitigating problems both before and after they occur makes vitamin C a force to be reckoned with.

One of the things I love about science driven brands like The Glow Maker, Kat Burki, Skinfix and Deciem’s NIOD, is the product messaging always skews a bit wonky, nerdy — and smart! As a case in point, right there on The Glow Maker’s product page for their 20% Vitamin C Facial Serum is this blurb:

Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate is an active stabilized derivative of Vitamin C. It is soluble in water and does not degrade in aqueous formulas and is effective at a neutral pH, plus it is stable in the presence of air exposure.

It is produced by direct phosphorylation of ascorbic acid sodium salt, where L-ascorbic acid is suspended in an oxygenated “non-hydroxylic” solvent together with sodium and then treated with a phosphorylating agent. It is easily bio-converted to Vitamin C by skin enzymes. We estimate that Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate has approximately 2.5 times the bioavailability of L-ascorbic acid to the skin. It stays in the skin for up to 72 hours and cannot be washed off once it soaks into the skin.

If you’re looking for a well-formulated, relatively stable, water-based Vitamin C serum The Glow Maker 20% Vitamin C Facial Serum is an excellent option. Good job on this one, Glow Maker! And for $25, welcome to the top of my Vitamin C list.

The Glow Maker | 1% Bakuchiol Facial Night Oil (1% Bakuchiol Beauty Serum)

You may know what a big fan of Bakuchiol I am. After all, I named a Bakuchiol serum the Skincarma Product of the Year in 2018! If you didn’t catch that article on Herbivore’s Bakuchiol Retinol Alternative Serum, you can still find it here.

You may also know that Bakuchiol is a legitimate alternative to Retinol. And, if you’re not a Retinol lover (I’m not!), but want the anti-aging benefits of Retinol, then Bakuchiol is your knight in shining armor. Not only is it a solid replacement for a well-formulated Retinol treatment, but if you’re accustomed to using Retinol on a regular basis, you know it’s best to use it on alternating nights, rather than daily. So if you love your Retinol, consider a Bakuchiol serum on those off-nights. And if you’re pregnant and need to avoid Retinol, Bakuchiol is perfect for you!

One of my favorite Bakuchiol products to hit the market in the three years or so since the first Bakuchiol products appeared is the Paula’s Choice 0.3% Retinol + 2% Bakuchiol Treatment. Of course, only Paula Begoun and team would have the savvy to create a top shelf anti-aging treatment that combines both Retinol and Bakuchiol.

PAULA'S+2.jpg

PAULA’S CHOICE 0.3% RETINOL + 2% BAKUCHIOL TREATMENT - BEST RETINOL FACE CREAM, BEST BAKUCHIOL CREAM

I first blogged about Bakuchiol in the fall of 2018 (nearly three years ago!) in an article titled, Bakuchiol Retinol Alternative Anti-Aging Serums from The Inkey List, Herbivore & More! available to read here.

I remember struggling to get my hands on an appropriate number of Bakuchiol products to pull together a valid collection for the article. I ended up with five. Today, there are dozens, maybe hundreds of accessible Bakuchiol products and, like the Paula’s Choice 0.3% Retinol + 2% Bakuchiol Treatment, even some that combine the two anti-aging actives in one powerful treatment.

What Is Bakuchiol and Is Bakuchiol Better than Retinol?

For insights on what Bakuchiol is and how it can be even considered a viable alternative to Retinol, I turn again to the the experts on the Paula’s Choice Research Team. In an article simply titled, What is Bakuchiol? the experts take a deep dive.

Here are excerpts from their extensive piece:

Bakuchiol is a vegan skin care ingredient found in the leaves and seeds of the Psoralea corylifolia  plant, native to India, where this herb has long been used in Ayurvedic practices. Bakuchiol also has roots in natural Chinese medicine. It is a potent antioxidant, visibly reduces skin discolorations from environmental exposure, and has a pronounced soothing effect on skin. Bakuchiol can also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, which is why you’re seeing it in more skin care products. The latest research shows topical application has unique benefits for all skin types.

Should You Use a Bakuchiol Serum or Bakuchiol Oil?

Since an increasing number of skin care products contain bakuchiol, you’ll be relieved to know that the product texture doesn’t impact efficacy. What counts is the concentration of bakuchiol; research has shown that amounts between 0.5-2% are ideal to get visible benefits.

Choose a bakuchiol serum or lotion-like treatment if you want a lightweight formula that layers easily with other leave-on products in your routine. A bakuchiol oil is great for dry, dehydrated skin. If using a heavier oil-based formula, it should generally be applied at night, as the last step in your routine.

How to Add Bakuchiol to Your Skin Care Routine

Adding a bakuchiol retinol alternative product to your skin care routine is easy: apply once or twice daily after cleansing, toning, and using a leave-on AHA or BHA exfoliant. If the product is a bakuchiol serum, apply before your moisturizer. If it’s a moisturizer with bakuchiol, apply after your serum. As mentioned above, a bakuchiol oil is best applied at night (or mix a drop or two into one of your favorite non-SPF skin care products each morning).

Bakuchiol is often said to be a natural alternative to retinol (also known as Vitamin A). This bakuchiol-retinol alternative connection is because bakuchiol follows some of the same skin-improving pathways; however, it doesn’t work exactly like this vitamin A ingredient. Both ingredients can reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging, and it’s perfectly OK to use a product that contains both.

Best Retinol Face Creams and Serums

Having discovered The Glow Maker’s 1% Bakuchiol Facial Night Oil about two years ago, it remains one of the best Bakuchiol serums for face available to this day.

Skincare infused with Bakuchiol comes in many forms nowadays. There are pulpy serums like Herbivore’s Bakuchiol Retinol Alternative Serum. There are creams like the Bakuchiol moisturizer from one of my fave brands, The Inkey List. And, there are replenishing facial oils as with the BYBI Beauty Bakuchiol Booster and The Glow Maker’s 1% Bakuchiol Facial Night Oil.

IMG_1162.jpg

PRODUCT REVIEW: THE INKEY LIST BAKUCHIOL CREAM – BEST ANTI-AGING FACE CREAM WITH BAKUCHIOL

The Glow Maker’s 96% organic formula is a true anti-aging and antioxidant powerhouse with Coenzyme Q10, Ginger Root Extract, Curcumin (Turmeric Root) and Astaxanthin — one of the most potent, naturally-derived antioxidants used in skincare.

If you’re curious about Astaxanthin, there’s a great piece on the Byrdie website titled, Meet Astaxanthin: The Secret Antioxidant Your Skincare Routine Needs ASAP.

IMG_2286.jpg

From the Byrdie article: “Astaxanthin is a potent antioxidant known as a carotenoid, found in various foods," says Joshua Zeichner, MD, a dermatologist based in New York City and the director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital. “It naturally has a bright red/orange color, and its high content in salmon is what gives it its color. It also is found in some forms of red algae. Studies have shown that the antioxidant ability of astaxanthin is much more powerful than Vitamin C.”

In addition to the antioxidant extracts in The Glow Maker’s 1% Bakuchiol Facial Night Oil, there are numerous non-fragrant plant oils that deeply nourish, moisturize, replenish and soothe the skin. Among them, the anti-aging superstars Rosehip Seed Oil, Prickly Pear Seed Oil, and Grape Seed Oil.

All of those plant oils give the 1% Bakuchiol Facial Night Oil a super nourishing, rich and silky texture that makes it the perfect final facial treatment to round off a PM regimen — particularly if you have normal to dry or dry skin.

In the colder months, this facial oil is a god-send, particularly in the New York winters. Instead of waking up looking dry and dehydrated, my complexion appears healthy, vibrant and not the least bit beaten down by the harsh, cold air.

Reflecting back on my initial deep dive into Bakuchiol, were I to perform a fresh assessment of the Bakuchiol options on the market currently, I would consider The Glow Maker’s 1% Bakuchiol Facial Night Oil among the best available. And at just $30, it’s not just the real deal, but a good deal.
