What Is Calamine and What Does Calamine Do for Skin?
Since childhood, I’ve been intrigued by calamine’s unique power to soothe skin irritations. While traditionally used as medicine, calamine is becoming increasingly popular in skincare products to treat acne and soothe irritation. I found an interesting, insightful piece on the Wishtrend website titled, 4 Amazing Skin Benefits of Calamine for Acne, What's the Catch? Here’s what I found most interesting:
Calamine? What’s that?
Never heard of calamine? Well, its full name could be less familiar to us but you must have heard of “cica-” and “cica-skincare” if you have ever tried to treat acne. You could say that calamine is now creating a buzz in the skincare industry. Considering that it was a steady remedy prescribed by dermatologists, this buzz looks like it’s going to last.
Calamine for Acne
Did you know that calamine can do so much for those with acne-prone skin? Calamine cannot actually prevent acne but it can be a safe and effective treatment for acne. Drying and astringent properties of calamine allow the pimples to dry up and tighten your pores as well. You are especially in luck if you have oily skin and excess sebum is the primary cause of your acne because calamine will dry that right up. Alongside its astringent properties, its anti-bacterial properties help tackle ance more effectively. So you should also know that that calamine works especially well on active pimples that are filled with pus and calamine is the best one you will get that you don’t have to buy off the counter.
Soothing Sensitive Skin
Calamine lotion is originally used for medical purposes to cure mild skin diseases. It is even listed on the World Health Organization’s “List of Essential Medicines” as an anti-inflammatory medicine. Not to mention that it goes way back to 1500 BC when it was first used as a medicine for itchy skin. So it is without a doubt that calamine is a way to go if you are looking to soothe your skin and treat minor skin issues. Calamine lotion is even so soft and mild it is safe for even babies to use.
First Aid Beauty’s Calamine Pore Purging Mask contains some Salicylic Acid that gets deep down into pores to dislodge hardened sebum and exfoliate dead surface skin cells. There’s also a touch of tea tree oil in it to help control excess oil and purify skin. I’m not a fan of essentials oils but FAB says the level is super low and just enough to be beneficial without the irritating drawbacks.
I love the subtle graininess of the calamine powder though! It gives it just a slight physical exfoliating effect.
This is serious innovation. I reminds me a little bit of Philosophy’s popular Purity Made Simple Pore Extractor Mask. That’s got a high 2% concentration of Salicylic Acid in it and I actually burned my nose a few years back leaving it on too long. No such issues with FAB’s new baby. Check it out here.
