If the last year taught me anything (and no doubt it taught me a whole lot!) — it’s that creativity often requires collaboration. Sure, I can achieve a lot on my own. And I have. But constant isolation can be stifling and unimaginative.

And a stifled imagination is the antithesis of creativity.

The exchange of ideas, visions and viewpoints feeds creativity and drives new ways of thinking that stretches the mind.

Think about this:

Have you ever read a great work of fiction written by a writer while they were incarcerated? Or in total isolation for an entire year? Why is that? They’ve got nothing but time on their hands!

Sure, Thoreau spent two years in isolation on Walden Pond, where he drafted his most famous work, Walden; or, Life in the Woods. But he’s the exception, not the rule. The Unabomber, Ted Kazinsky, wrote his infamous 35,000 word Industrial Society and Its Future manifesto in isolation, too. Look how that turned out.

So, in my Brooklyn isolation over the course of 2020, I am proud to say that I became neither Thoreau nor the Unabomber. I simply plodded along doing my thing with occasional bouts of creative genius. But they were few and far between. Most of the time my creativity was stilted — pained and painful.

tempImage7fFIo8.gif

I longed to be with other creative people — to create and collaborate. For me, 2021 is the perfect opportunity for a creative rebirth, a reawakening, and an emergence. To take my imagination, and my writing, to a whole new level. I want to get back to my own novel that I left perhaps half completed quite a while ago. (Yes, I have a half-written novel!)

And to finally start my own skincare brand — Skincarma Skincare™. It’s time to speak it into being!

Over the last few months I’ve been collaborating with one of my most creative, motivated and inspiring friends — New York-based photographer Antonio Jefferson. Antonio recently set up his own photo studio in the Bronx called Antonio Jefferson Studio where he shoots for beauty and fashion brands — and even his own collection of dope streetwear.

Meet Antonio…

“Growing up in a military family, Antonio Jefferson began traveling at an early age. From Dallas to Las Vegas to Japan, his childhood introduced him to the diverse beauty of the world around us — a beauty he felt inspired to share.

From behind the camera, Antonio realized that he could paint stories of his journeys through snapshots of the places, people, and things he encountered. It was here, in this quest for others to share the adventure, that Antonio’s passion for photography was born.

Today, Antonio uses his passion to tell the stories of friends, pioneers, curators, and brands. He thrives on finding the perfect still representation of the beauty in everything.

If you’re ready for your story to be told, reach out today.”

The skincare stuff starts here.

There are two ingredients that I wish everyone on Earth who’s serious about their skin health would incorporate into their own skincare routines — Vitamin C and Vitamin B3, or Niacinamide. Both are indispensable antioxidants — and much, much more. In the case of a good Vitamin C treatment, it can be one of the best anti-aging serums in your arsenal.

Yes, like sunscreen antioxidants are anti-aging.

Right at the start of the year, I published an article about my favorite Vitamin C serums of 2020 in a piece titled, The Year’s Best Vitamin C Serums with Paula's Choice, Sunday Riley, The Inkey List and More! which you can catch here. It was a collection of the latest and greatest Vitamin C serums, brightening face oils, anti-aging lotions and dark spot treatments.

Among my top picks were some of my favorite brightening Vitamin C serums to this day, including the Paula’s Choice C15 Super Booster and BeautyStat’s Universal C Skin Refiner. I’ve used up and replaced each of those products multiple times over the past year or so. During the darkest days of the pandemic, at least my skin was bright!

THE YEAR’S BEST VITAMIN C SERUMS WITH PAULA'S CHOICE, SUNDAY RILEY, THE INKEY LIST AND MORE!

Also in the mix were the cult Sunday Riley C.E.O. 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum and The Inkey List’s 15% Vitamin C and EGF Brightening Serum — a super silky, lightweight oil.

And rounding out my most recent collection is one of the best dark spot treatments — the Paula’s Choice C25 Super Booster, powered by an extraordinary 25% concentration of Ascorbic Acid, the pure form of Vitamin C.

Just two years ago, Vitamin C was perhaps the most under-appreciated of all skincare ingredients. Mainly because it seemed to be old news. And marketers don’t push what’s old; they spend their marketing dollars on what’s new, fresh, sexy and innovative — whether it works or not. Their job is to make you believe what they’re pushing does.

Until recently, it’s also been nearly impossible to keep high levels of Vitamin C stable in a skincare formula. The truly effective levels weren’t possible. Until you get to ten percent or more, you don’t really get the power brightening, collagen-building benefits that Vitamin C has to offer.

What Does Vitamin C Do for Skin?

There’s an excellent article on the remarkable benefits of Vitamin C for the skin from the experts on the Paula’s Choice Research Team titled, What is Vitamin C and How Does it Benefit Skin?

Vitamin C is one of the most exciting, research-proven ingredients you can apply to skin. This water-soluble antioxidant is a natural component of healthy skin. When we’re young, vitamin C levels in skin’s outermost two layers (epidermis and dermis) are abundant, but as we age, these levels naturally deplete. Unprotected sun exposure (UV damage) and pollution can accelerate this decline, leading to skin looking and feeling dull, uneven, and less firm than it once was.

Luckily, there are topical skin care solutions that can help mitigate this damage, so skin looks and feels healthier and younger longer.

Vitamin C Benefits for Skin

Vitamin C’s benefits for skin are vast, including its ability to even out skin tone and diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. While this powerhouse ingredient is well-known for its skin-brightening benefits, research also shows it can shield skin from the visible impacts of environmental stressors, including free radical damage. This synergy of mitigating problems both before and after they occur makes vitamin C a force to be reckoned with.

Wander Beauty | Sight C-er Vitamin C Concentrate

New Vitamin C serums are always my favorite skincare discoveries. It literally feels like Christmas when I get my hands on one. I was so honored to be among the first to experience Wander Beauty’s new Sight C-er Vitamin C Concentrate. I’ve been using it now off and on for the better part of the last two months and as the weather has warmed up, I’ve found myself reaching for Sight C-er as my daily moisturizer.

In fact, I’ve reached for several Wander Beauty products this past year. Among my absolute faves is the Wander Beauty Do Not Disturb Overnight Repair Concentrate — one of the least irritating Retinol serums I’ve come across. I’m no fan of Retinol as it just doesn’t play well with my skin and Wander Beauty’s Do Not Disturb is one of the best Retinol creams for sensitive skin.

Do Not Disturb is powered by Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate (HPR), more commonly known as Granactive Retinoid — the form used in the super popular The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane. HPR is one of the most effective OTC forms of the family of retinoids. It’s known to have efficacy on par with Retinoic Acid (aka Tretinoin or Retin-A) — but without the irritation.

IMG_4901.jpg

PRODUCT REVIEW: WANDER BEAUTY DO NOT DISTURB OVERNIGHT REPAIR CONCENTRATE - BEST RETINOL FACE CREAM

So I had high expectations for the Wander Beauty Sight C-er Vitamin C Concentrate. It’s met my expectations — and more. Honestly, it’s just a genius product, beginning with the name itself. As a copywriter who specializes in naming products, I love a good product name and I wish I’d thought of it myself!

Sight C-er is a brightening and antioxidant powerhouse with a blend of Vitamin C in the form of Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate and Vitamin C’s BFF Niacinamide — part of Wander’s proprietary C-Suite complex. Composed of six potent actives, the blend also includes moisturizing Squalane and Vitamin E, brightening Kakadu Plum Extract, and seven forms of Hyaluronic Acid to hydrate skin and prevent trans-epidermal water loss.

Do Vitamin C and Niacinamide Go Together?

With the combination of Vitamin C and Niacinamide in the Wander Beauty Sight C-er Vitamin C Concentrate, you may be wondering if the two work in combination. Well, contrary to the urban myth that Vitamin C and Niacinamide don’t play well together, Viamin C actually loves Niacinamide. There is a huge misunderstanding that the two powerful antioxidant vitamins somehow deactivate one another or worse, cause irritation.

It’s time to put that myth to rest.

There’s an excellent article from the Paula’s Choice Research Team titled, Can Niacinamide and Vitamin C Be Used Together? available on the brand’s site to read in full here. This is what I found most salient:

The studies showing incompatibility between niacinamide and vitamin C date back to the early 1960s (yes, that far). These studies were off from the start because they used non-stabilized forms of both ingredients, whereas both ingredients are typically stabilized when used in modern-day cosmetics formulas.

Niacinamide is a pretty “tough” ingredient; light and air don’t have the same effect on it as they do on antioxidants like vitamin C. What’s important for niacinamide is that the product be formulated at a pH that’s close to neutral. Vitamin C (pure ascorbic acid), on the other hand, does best in a low-pH (acidic) environment. However, nicotinic acid—the undesirable by-product of niacinamide and vitamin C—becomes an issue only when the niacinamide and vitamin C are combined in a high-temperature environment for a long time. That temperature is higher than you’d find in most at-home scenarios, including leaving a box of skin care products sitting outside in the sun for a couple of days.

Also, it’s important to point out that this concern applies only to pure vitamin C, not to its many other forms (such as magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, and ascorbyl glucoside). So, to reiterate, combining ascorbic or l-ascorbic acid with niacinamide is fine.

In short, any studies that show a definite issue from combining niacinamide and vitamin C were conducted in an environment that does not reflect what average skin care products experience during development, manufacturing, or in real-world storage and usage.

So yes, use your Vitamin C and Niacinamide serums in the same routine, any time you want. And if you can get the power pair in a well-formulated product like the Wander Beauty Sight C-er Vitamin C Concentrate that’s even better — and more convenient.

Wander’s Sight C-er has a super lightweight texture that’s more like a velvety milky serum — and it’s quite easy to layer. It’s also super comfortable on skin and melts right in. There’s even an ever-so-subtle iridescent hue that gives the complexion an instant radiance boost. It’s nearly invisible but I like that barely discernible glow. My complexion just looks a touch healthier.

Again, with its non-fragrant plant oils and humectants, Sight C-er makes a perfectly effective moisturizer for oily skin — or all skin types in warmer weather.

Beautycounter | Counter+ All Bright C Serum

I have only experienced a few products from clean skincare brand Beautycounter.

Among the first products I ever want to experience from a brand is always their Vitamin C serum. Because Vitamin C is among the most difficult ingredients with which to formulate, it’s always a sign of how capable a brand’s formulator is — and whether the brand’s formulation philosophy is solid. If they can get a Vitamin C right, they can get the rest of it right.

Plus, I just plain love Vitamin C serums!

I gotta say Beautycounter’s Counter+ All Bright C Serum is the complete package. It’s relatively well formulated (more on that in a minute). The All Bright C Serum is certainly an intriguing formula. It’s effective. And it’s a pleasure to use. In my experience, Vitamin C serums are rarely as unique as this one is.

What stands out in the Counter+ All Bright C Serum is its distinct turmeric scent. I love the smell of the potent antioxidant that’s popular in Ayurvedic medicine and has been relied upon for 4,000 years for its multitude of health benefits. In skincare, turmeric, like Vitamin C, is known as a powerful skin brightener in addition to its unparalleled antioxidant efficacy on the skin. Both Turmeric Root Extract and Vitamin C are antioxidant superheroes and, together, they make a real power duo.

What Are Antioxidants and What Do Antioxidants Do for Skin?

Antioxidants possess numerous benefits for the skin, including preventing skin damage and multiple signs of aging. There’s an excellent article from the experts on the Paula’s Choice Research Team titled, How Antioxidants Fight the Signs of Aging that you can catch here. This is what I found most insightful:

Antioxidants for Skin Benefits

Antioxidants play a unique role when it comes to diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Years of environmental damage (including unprotected sun exposure—one more reason to apply that broad-spectrum sunscreen!) slowly chip away at skin’s natural ability to look and feel healthy. As this damage builds up, skin gradually loses its ability to recover and bounce back as it once did. It’s not an exaggeration to say that after years of damage, skin becomes overwhelmed, and its “look young systems” begin to slow down.

Antioxidants in skin care step in to help shield skin’s surface from further deterioration by calming stressed skin and defending against the visible effects of pollution —something all of us encounter on a daily basis.

What happens as a result of applying antioxidants to your face is truly impressive: Skin’s appearance begins to turn around! It regains a firmer feel and more even skin tone—and those wrinkles you’re probably not fond of will visibly soften.

IMG_4168-edit.jpg

Photo credit: ©2021 Antonio Jefferson, Antonio Jefferson Studios

The All Bright C Serum actually contains two forms of Vitamin C in the form of Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (THD) and Bis-Glyceryl Ascorbate — a new water soluble, moisturizing derivative of Ascorbic Acid that’s produced by binding Ascorbic Acid and the common humectant, Glycerin. The combination of the two Vitamin C molecules amounts to a 10% total concentration.

There’s also Vitamin-C rich Camu Camu Fruit Extract. I love all of this about the formula.

What I don’t love is the inclusion of multiple citrus oils: Bergamot Fruit Oil, Mandarin Orange Peel Oil, Orange Flower Oil and Orange Peel Oil. Why? They add zero benefit for the skin and can be sensitizing. It’s not as though the All Bright C Serum smells like oranges. The turmeric is way too overpowering. So why the fragrant oils? Hmm..

There’s just so much good in Beautycounter’s Counter+ All Bright C Serum, I’m willing to overlook its sensitizing flaws. If your skin is sensitive to fragrant plant oils, you may want to avoid this one. If not, go for it!

Glossier | Super Glow Vitamin C + Magnesium Serum

I’ve been admiring Glossier from afar for a long time now and have made it my mission over the last several weeks to really take the plunge. As suspected, I like everything I’ve experienced. In particular, the Glossier Solution Exfoliating Skin Perfector has become one of my favorite exfoliating acid toners. That’s even though it can sometimes be too harsh for my sensitive-ish skin.

But perhaps the product that’s brought me the most satisfaction is Glossier’s Super Pure Niacinamide + Zinc Serum. In the grand scheme of things Niacinamide, it’s not the most potent, the most effective, or the best Niacinamide serum available. Super Pure is quite a simple formulation — with an INCI that’s just 10 ingredients deep. But it’s a solid formula, a moderate Niacinamide treatment — especially effective if you’re oily or acne prone.

IMG_1035.jpg

PRODUCT REVIEW: GLOSSIER SUPER PURE NIACINAMIDE + ZINC SERUM - BEST NIACINAMIDE SERUM FOR OILY SKIN

Next up in my Glossier glossary is the brand’s Super Glow Vitamin C + Magnesium Serum. Super Glow is powered by one of the least common and perhaps more unique forms of Vitamin C, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, at a 5% concentration. As with Glossier’s Super Pure Niacinamide + Zinc Serum, this serum is geared toward an oilier skin type.

According to the experts on the Paula’s Choice Research Team, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate is one of the best forms of Vitamin C for reactive skin.

“Form of vitamin C that is considered stable and is an effective antioxidant for skin. This form of vitamin C is also known to increase skin’s hydration levels as well as being effective for calming factors in skin that can lead to excess oil and signs of sensitization.

Like most forms of vitamin C, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (in amounts of 5% or greater) has been shown to improve the look of an uneven skin tone.”

Photo credit: ©2021 Antonio Jefferson, Antonio Jefferson Studios

Photo credit: ©2021 Antonio Jefferson, Antonio Jefferson Studios

The Glossier Super Glow is a relatively uncomplicated formula with lots of intrigue. There’s also pure mineral magnesium in the form of Magnesium PCA. Minerals are a bit of an unsung hero when it comes to optimizing skin hydration and defending against dehydration. Minerals help to regulate water flow within the skin’s layers to balance out hydration levels and maintain skin health.

There are also multiple replenishing non-fragrant plant oils in the Super Glow formula at a signifiant level, among them Jojoba Seed Oil, Shea Butter and Sunflower Seed Oil. The combination makes the Super Glow Vitamin C + Magnesium Serum into an effective daily moisturizer for oilier skin types — and most skin types on a hot summer day. Its silky, milky texture amazes me.

Again, Glossier’s Super Glow Vitamin C + Magnesium Serum is a simple formula. If your skin is sensitive or acne prone, simple is definitely better.

Kat Burki | Retin-C Treatment Complex

Call me a Kat Burki superfan. One of favorite new brand discoveries of 2021, Kat Burki has yet to let me down. I’m literally infatuated with several of the brand’s products. Experiencing Kat Burki is pure skincare joy for me, every time. There’s just so much nourishing, pro-skin health goodness in the formulas. And she nails it with the textures, too.

While I’ve enjoyed it all, I gotta say there’s nothing like Kat Burki’s Goji Essence — one of my favorite product discoveries of 2021. I’ve read it’s Kat’s personal fave and I can understand why. There’s just something about it that makes my skin come alive.

PRODUCT REVIEW: KAT BURKI GOJI ESSENCE - BEST LACTIC ACID TREATMENT, BEST FERMENTED ESSENCE

I’ve also been smitten by the Kat Burki Vital Hydration Blast, featured in my #selfcaresunday video on my YouTube channel a couple of weeks ago. If you missed it, you can still catch it here for your own #selfcaresunday session this coming weekend!

I’m not even close to exaggerating when I say that Kat’s Vital Hydration Blast is one of the most luxurious, skin-pampering moisture masks I’ve ever tried. I can’t get enough of it and have often left it on for hours on end. The longer, the better.

With a few faves under my belt, I was pumped to get to try the Kat Burki Retin-C Treatment Complex. It’s a unique combination of both Vitamin C and Vitamin A, or Retinol — in the form of Rovisome Retinol. I hadn’t come across Rovisome Retinol yet, so this is a first for me. There’s not a lot of information on it and even the experts on the Paula’s Choice Research Team haven’t gotten around to fully evaluating Rovisome Retinol yet.

According to the manufacturer, “Rovisome Retinol Moist is a stabilized vitamin A and can effectively reduce the appearance of wrinkles without inducing skin irritation. The Rovisome delivery system can provide formulators with the ability to deliver cosmetic actives to deeper skin layers, increasing ingredient bioavailability to the skin.”

Paired with the uncommon retinoid is Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate — a stable, water-soluble form of Vitamin C. According to the Paula’s Choice Research Team, while it functions as an effective antioxidant and skin brightener, “There is also research showing amounts of 1% and 5% concentrations of sodium ascorbyl phosphate can influence factors linked to breakouts. Thus, this form of vitamin C may be an effective adjunct to anti-acne products that contain benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid.”

At the heart of the Retin-C Treatment Complex, as with all of the brand’s formulas, is Kat’s signature antioxidant botanical blend — KB5 Complex. It comprises five natural extracts of arnica montana, centella asiatica, lavender, calendula and chamomile.

Photo credit: ©2021 Antonio Jefferson, Antonio Jefferson Studios

Photo credit: ©2021 Antonio Jefferson, Antonio Jefferson Studios

Added to the mix of the KB5 Complex, retinoid and Vitamin C, the formula is an antioxidant powerhouse with numerous botanical extracts — including Borage Seed Oil, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), and Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract.

Not much heavier than a toner, the Kat Burki Retin-C Treatment Complex has the lightest texture of the five Vitamin C products reviewed on the blog. The texture surprises me given the formula’s levels of nourishing non-fragrant plant oils, including Tamanu Oil, Flax Seed Oil, Grapeseed Oil and Evening Primrose Oil — one of the best anti-aging plant oils used in skincare.

It’s such an easy product to layer into a skincare routine. Notably, I’ve experienced no irritation after several consecutive nights of use.

Algenist | Blue Algae Vitamin C Dark Spot Correcting Peel

I first began playing around with Algenist a few years ago but somehow lost track of the brand. Since then, they’ve launched a number of really well-formulated, pro-skin health products powered by the brand’s proprietary Alguronic Acid, a derivative of microalgae.

Its signature ingredient, the brand has done extensive clinical testing on Alguronic Acid and claims that the active can help accelerate the visible benefits of other actives in Algenist formulas in just ten days. According to the brand, “Alguronic Acid helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and fights environmental assaults that cause visible signs of aging.”

With its triple acid complex of AHA’s, BHA and PHA, as well as pure Vitamin C derived from blue algae, the Algenist Blue Algae Vitamin C Dark Spot Correcting Peel is the ideal #selfcaresunday treat.
