BRANDS I LOVE: KAT BURKI SKINCARE BASED ON NUTRITIONAL SCIENCE - BEST BRIGHTENING FACE CREAM, BEST MOISTURE MASK FOR DRY SKIN
Wow. What a super productive week. And it ended on the highest of all high notes. Fully vaccinated with full immunity 14 days after my second dose.
And a manicure.
I went back to the bougie nail salon in Tribeca where I got a complimentary but entirely unnecessary pedicure last week. Pedis I don’t much care about. But a good manicure is kinda everything. I’m mortified every time I take a hand shot to demo the texture of a product. Life isn’t always smooth!
I felt like I was firing on all cylinders this week. That’s despite a couple of mildly exhausting migraine days. I say mildly because I have to keep myself in check. I have to remind myself that nothing I’m experiencing now is as bad as it was just six months ago. So, a few low-level migraine days is bearable and doesn’t hold me back.
And I certainly wasn’t held back this week. Lots of work with existing clients and a pair of new projects kept me fully occupied and nourished. The work even felt a tiny bit overwhelming. Is it just me or are other people looking back on the level of work they did pre-pandemic and feeling like they’re not quite there yet? I’m a writer, so I’m sensitive to that. I know when I’m writing a lot and keeping the quality high. So even though I feel like I’m somewhat back to normal, it still seems like I’m not being quite as productive as I used to be.
Hmm. Nails look good though…
The skincare stuff starts here.
Over the last few weeks I’ve been immersing myself in this wonderful, mysterious skincare brand, Kat Burki.
I have had my eye on Kat Burki’s namesake brand for some time now. But, curiously, I hadn’t had the opportunity to try out any of the celebrity nutritionist’s products until the beginning of this year.
I gotta say wow.
It’s rare that I discover a brand that I like this much. Sure, I come across products I like (even love!) often. But with every one of Kat Burki’s products, the experience is pure skincare joy for me, every time. There’s just so much nourishing, pro-skin health goodness in the formulas. And she nails it with the textures, too.
While I’ve enjoyed it all, I gotta say there’s nothing like Kat Burki’s Goji Essence — one of my favorite product discoveries of 2021. I’ve read it’s Kat’s personal fave and I can understand why. There’s just something about it that makes my skin come alive. (Psst…I take a deep dive into Goji Essence just below.)
I’ve also been smitten by the Kat Burki Vital Hydration Blast, featured in my #selfcaresunday video on my YouTube channel a couple of weeks ago. If you missed it, you can still catch it here for your own #selfcaresunday session this coming weekend!
I’m not even close to exaggerating when I say that Kat’s Vital Hydration Blast is one of the most luxurious, skin-pampering moisture masks I’ve ever tried. I can’t get enough of it and have often left it on for hours on end. The longer, the better.
The Vital Hydration Blast is a rich, creamy blend of Kat’s proprietary KB5 antioxidant complex — combined with multiple non-fragrant plant oils and extracts, botanical Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin C, ceramides, peptides and more. Seriously, it’s next-level clean luxury skincare and the perfect #selfcaresunday treat.

You might be wondering, as I had been, who exactly Kat Burki is — and why her skincare is so exceptional. How have I missed out all this time? I hadn’t been able to find many insights about her online, or the impetus behind launching the brand, so I reached out to Kat’s team.
Kat Burki actually majored in nutrition in college. And, like me with my initial French major, she didn’t think there were great career options. So she pursued a masters in the field of health law.
(And I pursued a degree in English. Good thing I did, or you’d be struggling to read this in French. Mon dieu!)
From the brand: “After completing her Juris Doctorate in health law, she added a graduate degree in health policy which saw her weaving in her knowledge of health, wellness and nutrition. With the bigger focus on how to keep people healthy, she had found her true calling, applying her expertise to the pursuit of longevity.”
The pursuit of longevity. Et voilà! The impetus behind the Kat Burki brand.
While her deep knowledge of nutrition and its effects on overall health was the central underpinning of her career, it was only upon meeting skincare formulators who specialized in cold processing of natural ingredients that she saw the opportunity to apply what she knew about health and nutrition to skin care products.
“It felt like I was being pulled back, in a creative direction, via my first love of nutrition. I had a moment: recognising that the skin is an organ on the outside of the body that we can fix, depending on what we use on it. Everything else is on the inside and has to by-pass a complicated digestive system,” says Kat Burki.
And so the marvelous, nutrient-dense, wellness-based Kat Burki skincare brand was born.
What Is Cold Pressed Skincare and Are Cold Processed Ingredients Better?
If you’re unfamiliar with the process of cold-pressing ingredients for a skincare formula, it’s actually quite interesting — and increasingly popular. You may have heard reference to cold-pressed oils; they’re common in some of the best natural facial oils for dry skin.
The process of cold-processing ingredients, rather than relying on a heat distillation method, helps to preserve the beneficial nutrients of botanical actives — like the pro-skin health fats and proteins found in plant oils. I equate it to the difference between eating vegetables raw and cooking them. Oftentimes, the cooking process destroys some of the nutrient content of our foods.
Let’s hear it for those who can stick to a raw diet! That’s certainly not me. I have yet to come across a raw pepperoni pizza that I’ve enjoyed eating.
I found an article on the Allure website titled, The Science Behind Cold-Pressed Skin-Care Ingredients, Explained. Feel welcome to read the entire piece here. This is what I found most salient:
Almost every foodie buzzword — organic, gluten-free, vegan — eventually migrates from the frozen-goods section to the beauty aisle. The latest to make the leap: cold-pressed. Once the hallmark of truly expensive juices everywhere, the term is now proudly printed on face oils and creams.
Saying something is cold-pressed means it was processed or extracted without involving high heat levels, which can destroy good-for-your-skin things like proteins and the fats in oils, says cosmetic chemist Ginger King.
But that's not to suggest you have to worry about all the skin-care products that aren't cold-pressed: Cosmetic chemists know to keep formulas below 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit) so that ingredients aren't compromised during the formulation.
Still, seeing “cold-pressed” can be an indicator of the quality of ingredients in a formula, particularly for oils: “Cold-pressing preserves the integrity of omega 6 and 9,” says King. “So it's nice to see that term next to each of the oils in a formula.” The catch: The term isn't FDA-regulated, so it's up to brands to be honest about whether their ingredients do or don't fall into the category.
Let’s take a look at a few of my favorites from Kat Burki’s range of skincare that takes care of the health and wellness of the skin — from the outside in…
Kat Burki | Vitamin C Intensive Face Cream
I’d read that this delicate little brightening face cream is a cult favorite from the Kat Burki collection. So I was naturally amped up to try it out for myself. I love a good Vitamin C treatment of any kind — be it a serum, an oil or a moisturizer. Vitamin C is one of the most pro-skin health actives found in skincare. If you’re looking to enhance your skin health from the outside in, then Vitamin C is simply indispensable.
According to the Mayo Clinic, Vitamin C is an essential nutrient, required by the body to support multiple functions and structures. It’s used “to form blood vessels, cartilage, muscle and collagen in bones. Vitamin C is also vital to your body's healing process.”
Vitamin C also helps protect our cells against free radical damage and even helps the body store reserves of beneficial iron.
Ironically, given the human body’s extensive needs and uses for Vitamin C, it is entirely incapable of producing and storing the substance on its own. How can that be? What an evolutionary fluke!
Instead, the antioxidant nutrient must be taken in via other means, including through our daily diet and the application of topical skin care like Vitamin C-infused serums, oils and face creams.
The Kat Burki Vitamin C Intensive Face Cream is a light-textured moisturizer powered by a 15% concentration of Vitamin C in the form of Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate. As I’ve shared previously, this stable, water-soluble form of Vitamin C is described by the experts on the Paula’s Choice Research Team as one of the best actives in skin care — with particular benefits for acne-prone skin.
According to the PC team, “Sodium ascorbyl phosphate is a stable, water-soluble form of vitamin C that functions as an antioxidant and is potentially effective for brightening an uneven skin tone. There is also research showing amounts of 1% and 5% concentrations of sodium ascorbyl phosphate can influence factors linked to breakouts.”
What Does Vitamin C Do for Skin?
There’s an excellent article on the remarkable benefits of Vitamin C for the skin from the experts on the Paula’s Choice Research Team titled, What is Vitamin C and How Does it Benefit Skin?
Vitamin C is one of the most exciting, research-proven ingredients you can apply to skin. This water-soluble antioxidant is a natural component of healthy skin. When we’re young, vitamin C levels in skin’s outermost two layers (epidermis and dermis) are abundant, but as we age, these levels naturally deplete. Unprotected sun exposure (UV damage) and pollution can accelerate this decline, leading to skin looking and feeling dull, uneven, and less firm than it once was.
Luckily, there are topical skin care solutions that can help mitigate this damage, so skin looks and feels healthier and younger longer.
Vitamin C Benefits for Skin
Vitamin C’s benefits for skin are vast, including its ability to even out skin tone and diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. While this powerhouse ingredient is well-known for its skin-brightening benefits, research also shows it can shield skin from the visible impacts of environmental stressors, including free radical damage. This synergy of mitigating problems both before and after they occur makes vitamin C a force to be reckoned with.
At the heart of Kat’s Vitamin C Face Cream, as with all of the brand’s formulas, is Kat’s signature antioxidant botanical blend — KB5 Complex. It comprises five natural extracts of arnica montana, centella asiatica, lavender, calendula and chamomile.
The Vitamin C Face Cream is essentially an antioxidant powerhouse with vital pro-skin health benefits that can help to brighten the complexion and maintain and optimize the health and wellness of the skin, day after day. That said, because it is delivered in a jar, all of those beneficial antioxidants will degrade and lose potency over time. Because of that, I appreciate the fact that it comes in what would otherwise appear to be a rather stingy one-ounce or 30 mL size. Use it or lose it!
If you have oily, acne prone skin — or are looking for a well-formulated moisturizer to brighten a dull complexion — the Kat Burki Vitamin C Intensive Face Cream is an ideal option for you.

Kat Burki | Nutrient C Eye Cream
I love a good eye cream; but I don’t always use an eye cream. Sometimes, if I’m confident that my moisturizer is gentle enough, I’ll just use that in my eye area. It’s much more common in my PM routine when I’m often too tired to do much beyond the basics.
Having had the experience of Kat’s Vital Hydration Blast, I was excited to try the Kat Burki Nutrient C Eye Cream.
The brand’s Nutrient C is more of a thick milky serum than a conventional eye cream in a pot. Eye creams in pots are even worse than face creams in jars.
Of course, eye creams should never, ever, ever come in pots or jars with lids. Of all the skincare wrongs, this is my biggest pet peeve.
Rant du jour complete.
The Nutrient C Eye Cream INCI starts out with Kat’s signature nutrient-dense KB5 antioxidant complex. Again, it’s composed of Arnica Flower Water, Centella Asiatica Leaf Water, Lavender Flower Water, Calendula Flower Water and Chamomile Flower Water. I’m convinced it is the KB5 Complex that feels like life on the skin.
Following the KB5 Complex in the INCI is nourishing humectant Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice and Rosehip Seed Oil — one of the best anti-aging oils for skin. It’s a rich source of essential fatty acids and has antioxidant activity on the skin.
Similar to the Kat Burki Vitamin C Intensive Face Cream, the Vitamin C choice for the eye cream is Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate. I don’t know the exact level, but it’s not insignificant. I’m guessing about 5% — the perfect level for the delicate area.
Nutrient C Eye Cream is just a wonderful cocktail of antioxidant non-fragrant plant oils and extracts that give it this rich, yet lightweight texture that feels supremely comforting around the eyes. It’s so invigorating and replenishing!
What Are Antioxidants?
There’s an excellent article full of antioxidants insights on the Paula’s Choice website titled, How Antioxidants Fight the Signs of Aging. The experts on the Paula’s Choice Research Team share this:
Antioxidants for Skin Benefits
Antioxidants play a unique role when it comes to diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Years of environmental damage (including unprotected sun exposure—one more reason to apply that broad-spectrum sunscreen!) slowly chip away at skin’s natural ability to look and feel healthy. As this damage builds up, skin gradually loses its ability to recover and bounce back as it once did. It’s not an exaggeration to say that after years of damage, skin becomes overwhelmed, and its “look young systems” begin to slow down.
Antioxidants in skin care step in to help shield skin’s surface from further deterioration by calming stressed skin and defending against the visible effects of pollution —something all of us encounter on a daily basis.
What happens as a result of applying antioxidants to your face is truly impressive: Skin’s appearance begins to turn around! It regains a firmer feel and more even skin tone—and those wrinkles you’re probably not fond of will visibly soften.
There’s a tiny, tiny amount of caffeine in Kat’s natural, brightening eye cream that may help to alleviate puffiness in the under-eye area, though it’s not enough to make me break-up with my go-to Caffeine Eye Solution from The Ordinary. If you must know, that happens to be the very first skincare product I apply to my skin every morning!
If you’re looking for one of the best natural eye creams to brighten the eye area and deliver potent antioxidant defense, the Kat Burki Nutrient C Eye Cream is the perfect option.

Kat Burki | Goji Essence
Oh em gee. If you’ve never used a skincare product that feels like life on your skin, you haven’t lived. This stuff is lit.
The Kat Burki Goji Essence is a remarkable fermented acid toner that lights up my skin on contact. I always know when I’ve used it because I’ll catch myself glowing hours later in the bathroom mirror. What is it about this essence that feels so exceptional on my skin, though?
I suspect it starts with Kat’s nutrient-dense KB5 antioxidant complex. But don’t quote me.
The brand’s signature blend of five nutrient-dense botanical extracts (Arnica Flower Water, Centella Asiatica Leaf Water, Lavender Flower Water, Calendula Flower Water and Chamomile Flower Water) just does something exceptional on the skin.
I don’t know what. But I bet Kat does! It’s her personal go-to product for a reason.
The Goji Essence’s oomph is powered by 5% Lactic Acid, plant cell extracts, the plumping Matrixyl-3000 peptide complex and, of course, power-antioxidant Goji Berry Extract, from which the product derives its name. No joke, it really feels like liquid skin health in a bottle — and a heavy green glass one at that!
Here’s how the brand describes Kat’s favorite product from her namesake range:
“Kat Burki’s personal go-to anti-aging product, this powerful essence is a triple threat of super foods, super acids and super peptides. Combined, these impeccable ingredients create a formula that gently exfoliates, helps moderate the skin renewal cycle and creates the powerful blurring effect that peptides and Lactic Acids are known for.”
What Is Lactic Acid and What Does Lactic Acid Do for the Skin?
Lactic Acid is my favorite of the range of alpha hydroxy acids. My skin seems to love it often and at any concentration. That’s not something I can say about it’s more powerful AHA partner in crime, Glycolic Acid.
But what makes it so uniquely effective? There’s a great piece on the benefits of Lactic Acid written by the experts on the Paula’s Choice Research Team titled, Lactic Acid for Skin. You can catch the full article here.
Lactic acid is a skin care ingredient that quickly delivers numerous benefits when applied in a well-formulated exfoliating product. When used in a pH-correct formula (whether designed to be left on skin or in a high-strength peel that’s rinsed after several minutes), lactic acid works by gently breaking the bonds that hold dead, dry skin cells to the surface.
If you’re using a rinse-off peel with lactic acid, do so once weekly or every other week. Apply the peel to cleansed skin, leave on for the designated amount of time, rinse, and follow with the rest of your skincare routine.
These dead cells shed on their own when we’re young, but sun damage, aging, and certain skin issues can slow or even stop this process, leading to a buildup of dead skin that creates a dull, older-looking complexion. Regular use of an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) like lactic acid can turn this around.
As with other acids, research shows lactic acid’s ability to exfoliate effectively depends on the product’s acid concentration, with amounts between 5-12% having reliably impressive results.
Funny thing, I love using Kat Burki’s Goji Essence so much (and so often!) that I get scared my skin will become sensitized when I do. But it never does. There are times when I’ve even double-dipped — using it once right after cleansing and then again 20 minutes later for no explicable reason whatsoever. I just want to.
I honestly can’t get enough of it. You have to try Kat’s Goji Essence for yourself to believe it.

Kat Burki | Dual Exfoliating Clay Mask
If you didn’t catch my YouTube video on a recent #selfcaresunday featuring the Kat Burki Dual Exfoliating Clay Mask be sure to catch it on my channel here. Watch me put this extremely pampering cleansing and retexturing treat into action!
Kat’s new Dual Exfoliating Clay Mask is quite an extra-ordinary clay mask infused with multiple antioxidant extracts, nourishing non-fragrant plant oils, aloe and kaolin clay.
It’s rich, wet and creamy; not the drying type of clay mask you’d expect. But what makes it exceptional is the “dual” phase indicated in the product’s name. It’s got both a physical exfoliation and a chemical one — unique to clay masks.
The chemical component in Dual Exfoliating Clay Mask comes in the form of Glycolic and Lactic Acids. I don’t know the levels of either of these but I’m guessing they’re at a relatively low concentration as I felt none of that anticipated tingling — nor did I want to feel it. That’s not very “self-caring” is it?
What is Glycolic Acid?
There is an insightful article from the experts on the Paula’s Choice Research Team titled, Glycolic Acid: What It Is and Why You Should Use It. In it, the experts expound on the many superb benefits of Glycolic Acid for the skin.
Glycolic Acid Benefits
Using an exfoliant with glycolic acid for your face results in a brighter, more even toned complexion. Like all AHAs, glycolic acid works by helping turn over spent cells on skin’s surface.
This type of exfoliation addresses numerous skin concerns, including sun damage, uneven tone, rough, flaky patches of skin, fine lines, and wrinkles. In higher concentrations, glycolic acid can even improve the look of deeper wrinkles.
Studies also show that glycolic acid significantly increases skin’s hydration. It does this by helping skin make substances like mucopolysaccharides, which help skin stay hydrated by increasing its natural content of hyaluronic acid, which in turn enhances skin’s resilience.
One exciting new note about glycolic acid: emerging research shows it might even protect skin against UV damage (in addition to reducing its damaging after-effects), though more studies need to be done and of course it doesn’t replace the need for sunscreen. Still, it’s a promising development!
Glycolic acid occurs naturally in sugar cane, but is most effective when synthesized in a lab, where its potency and concentration are optimized for use in skin care. Using plant sugars, like sugar maple, for their glycolic acid content is an option, but the bulk of the research on glycolic acid’s benefits for skin is about the synthetic form, because this type can be optimized for effectiveness, purity, stability, and pH, all critical to getting effective glycolic acid products.
Originally a wild-harvested Mediterranean plant, blue tansy — which is actually yellow in color — is now cultivated mainly in Morocco. When the flower’s popularity in beauty products surged, it was harvested almost out of existence in the wild. Today, supplies are steadily increasing, but it’s still one of the more expensive essential oils. A 2-ounce bottle may cost more than $100.
The blooms of Tanacetum annuum are yellow. Its slender leaves are covered with a fine white “fur.” The oil has a sweet, herbal fragrance due to its high camphor content.
The Dual Exfoliating Clay Mask is designed with Kat’s signature skin-soothing and hydrating KB5 Complex — the nourishing blend of Arnica Flower Extract, Calendula Flower Extract, Centella Asiatica Leaf Extract, Chamomile Flower Extract and Lavender Flower Extract.
It doesn’t dry down or feel uncomfortably tight on the skin. I’ve left it on way past its 15-minute rinse off recommendation and have experienced no redness or sensitivity. Just a plump, clear, rosy complexion. Kat’s new Dual Exfoliating Clay Mask is such a treat for #selfcaresunday — or selfcare on any day!
