SUMMER MOISTURIZERS PART II – SOME OF THE BEST LIGHTWEIGHT FACE CREAMS FOR OILY SKIN AND ALL SKIN TYPES IN HOT WEATHER

SUMMER MOISTURIZERS PART II – SOME OF THE BEST LIGHTWEIGHT FACE CREAMS FOR OILY SKIN AND ALL SKIN TYPES IN HOT WEATHER

IMG_9053.JPG

Not to boast, but I’m killing it with the diet. Have shed 12 pounds of the “quarantine fifteen” and think I’ll shoot for 20 in all.

I haven’t eaten this healthy in six months! Morning usually consists of a veggie shake with cucumbers, celery, carrots, kale, maybe a little fennel, and oat milk.

Lunch and dinner are most often a salad or roasted veggies with baked salmon or chicken.

Funny about salmon though. I’ve never been a big fan. The first time I had salmon was on my high school trip to Europe – the first time I was ever away from my family, and the first time I’d ever left the country. We flew through London Heathrow on our journey to Paris, Venice, Florence and Rome.

On the flight across the Pond, I ordered the salmon, having always been curious and never having tried it in my life. I grew up Italian in the 70s and 80s. We didn’t eat salmon; we ate calamari and lots of shellfish. That British Airways meal was perhaps the nastiest thing I’d ever eaten – and it took me decades to get over it!

Now I kinda crave a nice baked or grilled salmon filet. Isn’t life funny like that?

Of course, as part of my permanent a.m. routine now, Orpheus and I kick off every morning with 30 minutes of yoga! And, quite often he falls asleep on the mat and I leave him there to chill as I go about making the healthy veggie shake.

I gotta say it’s been a nice, productive and even motivating week. I couldn’t ask for better…

IMG_9176.jpg

The skincare stuff starts here.

So, last week I kicked off my second annual summer moisturizer series with a blog article titled, Summer Moisturizers Part I – Some of the Best Lightweight Face Creams for Oily Skin and All Skin Types on Hot Weather. If you missed it, catch it here.

IMG_8813.JPG

In Part One, I highlighted five superbly clean lightweight moisturizers ideal for the summer heat.

Among them was perhaps the most well-formulated moisturizer I’ve ever come across in my long career in beauty — the 90% organic, 100% natural Clear 1% Centella Cream Serum from new-to-the-scene brand, Organic the New Beauty.

Yet, as terrific as that moisturizer is, there are plenty of wonderful summer-skin friendly options, including The Inkey List’s Peptide Moisturizer, First Aid Beauty’s Ultra Repair Oil-Control Moisturizer, the Feuillete Fresh Intensive Cream and SELF/ish Oil-Free Moisturizer — which was just introduced three weeks ago.

This week, I’m excited to bring you five more picks — to complete my top ten summer moisturizers for 2020. All clean, all powered by natural ingredients — and none of the brands even existed last summer. I really love that!

With this second collection, two are more appropriate for normal, combo and dry skin — the Schăf Face Moisturizer and The Glow Maker’s Vitamin C Facial Moisturizer. There’s a new moisturizer from a brand targeted to guiding men through their skincare journey via text messaging, Bruvy’s The Face Moisturizer. (How cool is that?!)

IMG_9434.jpg

Rounding out my ten summer moisturizer picks are the Universal Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream from BeautyStat, the brand behind what I consider one of the best Vitamin C serums of all time — and the Inner Light Moisturizer from indie brand, Strange Bird Beauty. It’s a brand with a soul and I’m honored to introduce it to you.

Let’s take a look at the rest of my clean summer moisturizer picks in this year’s two-part series…

Schăf Skincare | Face Moisturizer

I first reviewed the dope, new Schăf skincare brand on my blog three weeks ago in an article titled, Brands I Love: Schaf Skincare - Among the Best Natural Skincare for Face. You can catch it here. It’s a super clean, natural skincare collection from Canada and it’s really got me all choked up. I’m just smitten with the three products I’ve tried.

Every Schăf product is formulated with ingredients that are really pro-skin health — and free of silicones, parabens, fragrance, essential oils, artificial colors, sulfates, mineral oil, animal by-products, gluten, GMO’s, and more.

Instead, all Schăf’s clean facial skincare products are loaded up with natural ingredients that skin eats and drinks right up — herbal extracts, plant oils, and vitamins that promote and optimize skin health.

IMG_4224 2.jpg

I love a good clean, natural face cream packed with pro-skin health goodness — and devoid of toxins and other known skin irritants.

The Schăf Face Moisturizer is one of the best natural face creams — and now a personal fave of mine. The vegan formula is light, fluffy and legit packed with goodness.

It’s a nourishing blend of natural and organic non-fragrant plant oils like antioxidant Grape Seed Oil, Avocado Oil, Jojoba Oil, and cold pressed Hemp Seed Oil — rich in Omega fatty acids, vitamins and minerals.

The inclusion of Hemp Seed Oil is a terrific choice — and puts the Schăf Face Moisturizer right up there among the best natural moisturizers for face. There’s been a lot of buzz over the past year about ingredients derived from cannabis, or the hemp plant. Among them, Cannabidiol (CBD), Hemp Oil and Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil.

And there’s also quite a bit of misinformation out there regarding the components of the hemp plant used in skin care. Much of it has been driven by big budget marketers in search of bigger sales and bigger bonus checks.

I wrote an article a few weeks back about CBD in skin care titled, CBD Skincare and the Best CBD Serums for Face from Paula's Choice, Balm Labs, Josie Maran & More! If you missed it, you can catch it here.

IMG_4223.jpg

While CBD possesses remarkably effective skin-soothing properties and is ideal for sensitive, irritation-prone skin, Hemp Seed Oil is another thing entirely.

Think of Hemp Seed Oil as on par with similar non-fragrant plant oils like Argan Oil, Jojoba Oil and Rose Hip Seed Oil. Simply, it’s packed with nourishment that skin craves — my skin, your skin, Canadian skin!

According to the experts on the Paula’s Choice Research Team,

“From the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa. Because both hemp and marijuana are from the genus Cannabis, they are often thought (erroneously) to have similar properties. In cosmetics, hemp seed oil is used as an emollient and to supply skin with omega fatty acids it needs to replenish itself and strengthen its surface against moisture loss. Specifically, hemp seed oil contains the omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid and the omega-6 fatty acid linoleic acid.

Hemp seed oil also contains beneficial phospholipids, plant sterols, amino acids (it’s especially high in the amino acid arginine) and is a rich source of antioxidant vitamin E.

Another benefit of hemp seed oil is that it seems to enhance the benefits of cannabidiol, also known as CBD. This is likely due to the interaction between trace amounts of cannabinoids in hemp seed oil and pure cannabidiol.”

IMG_7119.jpg

The inclusion of multiple non-fragrant plant oils like trendy Hemp Seed Oil isn’t what’s most noteworthy about the Schăf Face Moisturizer, though.

What surprises me about the formula is the high concentration of skin-fortifying peptides. A scan of the INCI and I found two anti-aging peptides in the top ten — Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-1 and Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7.

Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 is a peptide found in the popular Matrixyl 3000 complex; it helps to replenish skin and calm signs of irritation in sensitive skin.

Given the attention paid to skin sensitivity in Schăf’s formulation of the Face Moisturizer, I’d venture to say it’s one of the best moisturizers for sensitive skin, too. Seriously soothing stuff.

I just love everything about it! While it’s heavy on pro-skin health actives, it‘s not at all heavy on skin, making it ideal for all skin types except perhaps very oily.

The Glow Maker | Vitamin C Facial Moisturizer

You probably know that I’m a big fan of The Glow Maker, having reviewed the brand on my blog several weeks ago. If you missed it, you can always catch the article here.

IMG_7731.jpg

Born and raised in sunny Southern California, the brand’s founder and lead chemist knows a thing or two about how to make a terrific skincare formulation. And this is really good stuff.

First, I like that the level of Vitamin C isn’t crazy high. Because you really can overdo it if you’re using a dedicated Vitamin C serum along with a moisturizer that contains a lot of Vitamin C as well.

I know I’ve overdone it when my face turns a “healthy” shade of pink — and there’s nothing I’m particularly embarrassed about!

The Glow Maker Vitamin C Facial Moisturizer is formulated with six percent Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, which the brand (and the lead chemist) says translates to 15% Vitamin C bioavailability in the skin.

Vitamin C Facial Moisturizer is a rich blend of beneficial actives — just about everything skin needs to stay healthy.

IMG_7730.jpg

There’s moisturizing Panthenol, Vitamin E and organic Hyaluronic Acid in the form of low-molecular weight Sodium Hyaluronate — the salt form of HA that’s more skin compatible and thus a more effective version of the humectant.

IMG_9885.JPG

In addition, there are multiple antioxidant botanicals including wild-harvested Kakadu Plum and Camu Camu Fruit extracts — both of which are powerful sources of Vitamin C.

There are also a slew of non-fragrant plant oils and butters including an anti-aging fave of mine, organic Rosehip Seed Oil — as well as organic Sunflower Seed Oil, organic Shea Nut Butter, and organic Mango Kernel Butter.

You can’t go wrong with this stuff. It’s a bit heavier than expected so a little goes a long, long way.

And, get this: it’s just $20 on the Glow Maker website!

Strange Bird Beauty | Inner Light Moisturizer

Meet Strange Bird Beauty!

I first discovered the clean, quirky indie brand when it launched last fall. The brand was founded by Tina Rudolf, a painter, Reiki master, devoted meditator — and mom of two. The fact that Tina found time to create a skincare brand, too, is so inspiring to me. That’s really hard to do!

IMG_2094.jpg

Strange Bird was founded on the principals of life balance and self-care. You know that speaks to me. I look forward to my selfcare Sunday skin reboot sessions all week long.

Tina believes, “It’s not only about what you do but how you do it. True self-care is the practice of creating a life from which you don’t want to escape. It’s as much about being comfortable in your own skin as it is about being comfortable in your own life.”

Each of the products in Strange Bird’s 3-product facial skincare collection are “naturally sourced, high vibrational, and 100% real.” That somehow makes me long for chill Sunday mornings in my Hollywood apartment back in LA. Ahhhh….

The Strange Bird range is comprised of a silky serum, milky moisturizer and, well, this fantastic clay cleanser that’s brought me both balance and joy on several #selfcaresundays in Brooklyn over the last few months.

Rich in white kaolin clay and a slew of non-fragrant plant oils, the Strange Bird Inner Clarity Cleanser is one of the best clay masks for summer skin — oily skin, dry skin, and all skins that crave a rebalancing deep detox. Seriously good stuff!

IMG_9355.JPG

The Inner Light Moisturizer is a super lightweight, milky fluid that smells like a slice of herbal heaven. As all of the Strange Bird formulas, it’s clean and natural — with no added fragrance, synthetic preservatives or other mortifying toxins that could potentially irritate the skin.

There’s just something so uniquely calming and sensorial about the Inner Light Moisturizer that makes me want to get to the very essence of its being. Yup, I’m back in LA.

IMG_9174.jpg

To start, it’s infused with the brand’s signature antioxidant “G Team” — a veritable antioxidant powerhouse complex of ginger, ginseng, and goji berry to hydrate, reduce inflammation, promote cell regeneration and, of course, to mitigate environmental damage to the skin.

Among the first things I admire about the formula is the fact that the first ingredient isn’t water; rather, it’s skin soothing, humectant Aloe Leaf Juice.

As I said in last week’s blog on my first five summer moisturizer picks, “in the case of water, which very often makes up 60-70% of a skincare formula, there is little significant benefit to the skin. In fact, when it comes to topical application of a skincare product, water is useless.”

So I have to give it up to the Strange Bird chemist for that stroke of genius. It may seem like no big deal to most, but to me, it’s just plain smart AF.

Looking past the aloe, there are by my count two dozen botanical extracts and oils, many of them organic. In addition to the brand’s G Team trio, there’s Mango Seed Butter and both White Tea Leaf Extract and Japanese Green Tea Leaf Extract — still more antioxidant potency. That Strange Bird chemist was on fire.

IMG_9175.jpg

Notably, also in the top ten is Lucidum Stem Extract — or reishi mushroom. According to the experts on the Paula’s Choice Research Team,

Ganoderma lucidum is a species of mushroom that's long been a staple of traditional Chinese medicine. Also known as Reishi mushroom, when applied to skin, research has shown a compound it contains (ganodermanondiol) can interrupt the enzyme tyrosinase, which in turn can visibly reduce certain types of discoloration.

Research has also shown this extract can improve skin’s supportive elements while also reducing signs of irritation. It’s a natural source of vitamin D2, skin-beneficial trace minerals such as copper and selenium, and the amino acids leucine and lysine.

As with most other types of mushrooms, Ganoderma lucidum is also a very good antioxidant. The extract form of this mushroom eliminates the water component (the whole mushroom that you’d buy in the grocery store contains over 90% water), so only a small amount is needed to get its benefits.

Am I perhaps getting to the essence of the formula, what makes it so unique after all? I wanna think so!

IMG_9375.JPG

There are, of course, more classic skincare actives, including power-humectant Sodium Hyaluronate — the salt form, highly skin-compatible form of Hyaluronic Acid.

Because of its complex of nourishing botanical oils, the Inner Light Moisturizer is ideal for all skin types with the exception of very oily skins.

True to the “high vibrational” nature of the formulas, Inner Light is infused with rose quartz and olive essence, both of which the brand says “will help you feel the love and support around you.”

And about the strange sounding name? Tina says, “Strange bird is my nickname…Strange Bird doesn’t only represent the mission of celebrating your authenticity, but it’s personal because we’re a family of strange birds. So, it’s a love letter to my family as well.”

BeautyStat | Universal Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream

I came across this precious pot of cream several months ago when I first reviewed BeautyStat on my blog. Of course, the focus was on the brand’s Vitamin C products — and one of the best Vitamin C face serums I’ve come across. In fact, the BeautyStat Universal C Skin Refiner was one of my top picks for a Vitamin C serum for face in 2019. If you didn’t catch it, I invite you to check out my full review of BeautyStat here.

So, about the brand’s lesser appreciated Universal Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream. The texture and composition are so light, it’s just perfect for summer weather.

As always, I am no fan of products that come in jars. The moment you open the lid and expose the formula to light, air and bacteria, it begins to degrade. Just like driving a new car off the car lot! If a product is going to be housed in a jar, it had better damn well make sense — and you better be sure to use it up quickly — something you’ll certainly do if you make Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream your summer moisturizer. As counterintuitive as it sounds, when a product comes in a jar, less is more.

IMG_3495.jpg

And BeautyStat’s Universal Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream comes in a relatively stingy one-ounce jar — exactly how I like it.

But the smaller, leaner size isn’t the only thing that’s noteworthy about the Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream.

The first time you remove the lid, you know something’s different. To put it rather inelegantly, it looks like a thick blend of yogurt and bacon fat.

I know, I know, skin care is supposed to be sexy. And there’s nothing sexy about that, is there? The thing is, the formula is so thick that it’s highly unlikely to dispense well through the tiny hole in a more protective, air-tight tube. So I get it.

Okay, so Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream has a unique texture and appearance. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that one of the reasons it looks like a gelatinous goop is due to its blend of inherently goopy ingredients.

First, a bit of trivia: in its natural form, Hyaluronic Acid is a gelatinous goop! But Pro-Bio Moisture Boost also contains a high level of humectant Glycerin, Dimethicone, ceramides and Cetearyl Olivate — an oily, waxy ester that combines Cetearyl Alcohol and fatty acids found in olive oil. All good goopy stuff for skin, right?!

IMG_4054.jpg

But perhaps the formula headliner is its bio-fermented active, Bifida Ferment Lysate. Fermentation in skin care is hot right now — and for good reason.

Ferments are not only super nourishing for the skin in any weather, but they actually break down other actives in the formula into smaller molecules that can better penetrate skin’s protective outer barrier — rather than sitting on the skin surface giving you that uncomfortable, veiled feeling.

IMG_9519.JPG

Rated by the Paula’s Choice team as one of the “best” ingredients for the skin, Bifida Ferment Lysate is “a probiotic ingredient derived from a specific type of yeast obtained by the fermentation of Bifida bacteria. Research on human skin explants (cross-sections of intact human skin) has shown this ingredient can help reactive skin become less sensitive to environmental aggressors via strengthening its microbiome. Doing so encourages skin to visibly repair itself and begin looking healthier.”

BeautyStat’s Universal Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream is packed with nutritive goodness for the skin that keeps it plump, hydrated and nourished. Just be sure to use it up before summer is out!

Bruvy | The Face Moisturizer

There’s nothing like a lightweight, affordable face cream on a hot summer day, innit bruv?!

In part one of my summer moisturizer picks last week, I introduced a new, democratically priced men’s skincare brand, SELF/ish skincare. The SELF/ish collection of clean skincare for men ranges from a $12 hand sanitizer to the brand’s $25 exfoliating pads. In fact, SELF/ish products are so affordable, you can literally purchase the entire facial skincare routine for men for little more than $100.

IMG_2822.jpg

So I’m thrilled to introduce a second, democratically priced skincare brand made for men — Bruvy!

The brand’s inaugural collection comprises the basic essentials the average guy wants — and nothing more. Literally, Bruvy offers just two well-formulated products –– $24 The Face Moisturizer and $20 The Face Cleanser.

Says Bruvy, “We’re not about health trends or fads. So when we began developing a set of essentials we wanted something simple, effective, and backed by real science — products that stand the test of time. We worked with experienced chemists and real guys to create the perfect set of daily essentials. The result is everything guys need and nothing you don’t.”

I know a lot of guys who aren’t into the complexities of skin care; that’s a real turn-off to them. So I can appreciate Bruvy’s “designed for simplicity” take on mens’ skin care. But, the one thing I think all guys want is help understanding their skin and their skin care.

And that’s what Bruvy truly did differently, where they innovated and brought something completely new to the men’s skincare market. The brand offers what’s cleverly termed “Guydance” — a texting service that invites guys to check in with the Bruvy crew seven days a week for “product advice, motivation, and pro tips on how to look and feel your best.”

IMG_2824.jpg

It’s kind of genius IMO. Guydance comes free with every purchase.

In fact, purchase Bruvy’s The Face Moisturizer and get all the help you need for your skin along with it! Created for a man’s slightly thicker, slightly oilier skin, The Face Moisturizer is ideal for a hot summer day.

It’s an all-natural, plant-based lotion made with lots of pro-skin health goodness, including bio-compatible, moisturizing Squalane, soothing Allantoin and a healthy dose of replenishing ceramides.

IMG_2827.jpg

It’s also got solid antioxidant oomph to it. There’s Resveratrol, a potent polyphenolic antioxidant found in both red grapes and red wine.

More interestingly and at a higher concentration at ingredient number three, is Lupinus Albus Protein –– a rarely used component of white lupine seed oil and considered among the best antioxidants by the Paula’s Choice Research Team.

For just $24, The Face Moisturizer is good stuff for guys (and gals, too!).

And the fact that you get access to a team of skincare gurus at your fingertips makes it among the best face creams for men I’ve come across.

Check out this cool new brand for blokes on the brand’s website here.
