PRODUCT REVIEW: PURITO PURE VITAMIN C SERUM – ONE OF THE BEST NATURAL VITAMIN C SERUMS FOR FACE

PURITO | PURE VITAMIN C SERUM

This review was originally part of my blog article titled, “The Year’s Best Vitamin C Serums with The Ordinary, Clinique, Beauty Stat & More!” You can still catch the full piece here.

Yes, I’m the world’s biggest #puritofanboy, having reviewed upwards of a dozen products from the clean Korean skincare brand.

Among my many favorites are the Purito From Green Cleansing Oil which, you may recall, played the crucial role of cleanser in my Complete Green Skincare Routine last fall.

I’m also quite fond of Purito’s Niacinamide serum, the Galacto Niacin 97 Power Essence — one of the most well-formulated, and well-rounded Niacinamide products available; and right up there with the Paula’s Choice 10% Niacinamide Booster, though it’s not nearly as potent as Paula’s OG serum.

As I alluded to earlier, Purito’s Pure Vitamin C Serum is literally the first-ever dedicated Vitamin C serum from a Korean skincare brand. That’s not to take anything away from the COSRX Triple C Lightning Liquid, but that formula was developed by the US-based K-beauty emporium Soko Glam exclusively for the US market.

What does Vitamin C do for skin?

There’s an excellent article on the remarkable benefits of Vitamin C for the skin from the experts on the Paula’s Choice Research Team titled, What is Vitamin C and How Does it Benefit Skin?

Vitamin C is one of the most exciting, research-proven ingredients you can apply to skin (1). This water-soluble antioxidant is a natural component of healthy skin. When we’re young, vitamin C levels in skin’s outermost two layers (epidermis and dermis) are abundant, but as we age, these levels naturally deplete. Unprotected sun exposure (UV damage) and pollution can accelerate this decline, leading to skin looking and feeling dull, uneven, and less firm than it once was (2).

Luckily, there are topical skin care solutions that can help mitigate this damage, so skin looks and feels healthier and younger longer.

Vitamin C Benefits for Skin

Vitamin C’s benefits for skin are vast, including its ability to even out skin tone and diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles (3). While this powerhouse ingredient is well-known for its skin-brightening benefits, research also shows it can shield skin from the visible impacts of environmental stressors, including free radical damage (4). This synergy of mitigating problems both before and after they occur makes vitamin C a force to be reckoned with.

Purito’s option isn’t the Vitamin C powerhouse that the Allies of Skin 35% Vitamin C is — with a conservative concentration of 5% Vitamin C. (N.B. Purito recently reduced the concentration from a higher percentage due to stability issues.) Not all skins need massive quantities of any specific substance and higher percentages aren’t always essential. What is essential is balance and feeding your skin what it needs to stay healthy. I know many people who simply cannot and do not use Vitamin C because their skin doesn’t tolerate it well.

Guess what! Purito’s Pure Vitamin C Serum may be the ideal option for you if you’re one of those people.

A deep dive into the INCI of the clean, natural formula and the first thing that stands out is ingredient number one — Sodium Hyaluronate liquid. I assume that’s simply a blend of the salt form of Hyaluronic Acid and, well, water. Interesting though. And, according to Purito, it comprises 84% of the formula.

What’s left of the remaining 11%? Niacinamide, an Amino Acid or two and a slew of pro-skin health, antioxidant botanical extracts including Apple Fruit Extract, Panax Ginseng Root Extract and even Broccoli Extract, something you don’t often see in a skincare INCI.

The texture is something of a watery, lightweight gel due to the high content of the aforementioned Sodium Hyaluronate liquid. It’s lovely though. The one drawback to the formula is the intense, unappealing odor it gives off. It’s not off-putting to me, but I imagine many would find it so.

That’s par for the course if you’re looking for a 100% natural, fragrance-free and fragrant plant oil-free Vitamin C treatment. This stuff definitely doesn’t smell like a crisp burst of orange!
